Creativity, activity, service (CAS) is one of the three essential core elements every student must complete as part of the Diploma Program (DP).
Throughout the CAS course, students are involved in a range of activities alongside their academic studies. The course is organized around the three strands of creativity, activity, and service defined as follows:
• Creativity—exploring and extending ideas leading to an original or interpretive product or performance
• Activity—physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle
• Service—collaborative and reciprocal engagement with the community in response to an authentic need
CAS enables students to enhance their personal and interpersonal development by learning through experience.
It provides opportunities for self-determination and collaboration with others, fostering a sense of accomplishment and enjoyment from their work.
At the same time, CAS is an important counterbalance to the academic pressures of the DP.
Course Content
The CAS programme formally begins at the start of the DP and continues regularly for at least 18 months with a reasonable balance between creativity, activity and service. Participation in CAS and relevant activities encourage students to share their interests and special talents while developing awareness, concern and the ability to work cooperatively with others.
Requirements of the course include planned/unplanned singular and ongoing experiences. A meaningful CAS program must be more than just a series of unplanned/singular experiences. Students must be involved in at least one CAS project during the program. The project challenges students to:
show initiative
demonstrate perseverance
develop skills such as collaboration, problem solving and decision making.
