The purpose of the QFT is to help students ask better questions. Asking questions is a skill that can be practiced and improved. The QFT is very useful for AI prompt engineering and exploring topics in group settings.
Decide the focus of your questions. In school you will likely begin with a topic or purpose your instructor has provided.
Perhaps you have to identify a community problem and then write about that problem and how it impacts you. You could use the QFT to identify problems and then later use the QFT again to ask questions about a specific community problem.
Later in life you might use a QFT to think about questions you want to ask a potential employer or what you want to know during a doctor visit.
Now that you know the focus of your question, your goal is to set a timer for 5-10 minutes and ask as many questions as you can using these simple rules:
Ask as many questions as you can.
Do not stop to discuss, judge or answer any question.
Voice record or write down every question exactly as it is stated.
Change any statements you made into questions.
Label each question as an open-ended or closed-ended question. Both types of questions have strengths and weaknesses. Some may be stronger when changed from one type of question to the other.
Closed-ended questions can be answered with yes/no or a short answer. They usually have a definite answer and are good for clarifying details. Ex: What is a renewable resource?
Open ended questions cannot be easily answered and are used to gather insight and explore understanding. Ex: What are the advantages and disadvantages of solar energy power?
Try changing some of your open-ended questions into closed-ended questions and some of your closed-ended questions into open-ended questions.
Depending on the purpose of your questioning, decide on your strongest 3 questions.
For a research project you'll want an open-ended question that helps you explore and develop understanding of a complex topic.
Ex: How can we identify which renewable energy sources are most cost-effective for our community to pursue within the next ten years?
For other assignments you may need questions that help you find specific bits of information or connect ideas.
Ex: What are the most used renewable energy sources?
