Getting to know your Chromebook

Chromebooks

A Chromebook is not actually a computer in the traditional sense. Instead of having a computer operating system such as Windows or Mac, it runs Google's Chrome OS, which is basically the Internet. They are designed to be used primarily while connected to the Internet with most applications and documents living in the cloud.

Turning it On

Firmly press and release the power button.

The power button may be in a different location depending on the model you are using. It might be on the keyboard or it might be on the side of the Chromebook.

Don't hold it down. The screen may stay black for approximately 8 seconds before it comes on. If it doesn't come on within a few seconds, press and release the power button again.

Logging in

When the Chromebook first starts up, the Google Sign in screen will appear.Type the first part of your Google email address in the box provided.

Example: 30smith_john

You don't need to type "@dublinstudents.net" because it is already there for you.

Click Next

On the next screen put in your password.

Click Next

You will now be logged onto the Chromebook.

Turning Off Your Chromebook

There are a several ways to shut down (or turn off) the Chromebook.

One way is to click on the Control Panel or Status Area in the bottom right corner. When that opens, click on the Power icon to shut it down.

Another way to turn off the Chromebook is to press and hold the power button on the left side.

One of these pictures will appear (depending on whether you are signed in to the Chromebook or not).

Click or press "Power off".



A final way to shut down is to first sign out of the Chromebook. Then, click "Shut Down" from the log in screen in the lower left corner.
