COMMENDED STUDENTS IN THE 2021 NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The principal, Gregory S. Riley, of Dallas High School, announced today that Claire Charlton and Emily Crahall have been named Commended Students in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program.  A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented by the principal to these scholastically talented seniors.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise.  Although they will not continue in the 2021 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2021 competition by taking the 2019 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

“Those being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success”, commented a spokesperson for NMSC.  “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation.  We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”

2019-2020 Student of the Quarter - Quarter 2

Congratulations to the following students for their positive contribution to Dallas High School:

From the Social Science Dept:  Madison Pertl

Madison is an exemplary student in three different social science courses:  Comparative Religions, Sociology, and Economics.  Her dedication and attention to detail in completing projects and preparing for tests make her a positive role model for the students of Dallas High School.

From the Music Department:  Jacob Thomas

Jacob has been an active member of the Music Department for his entire High School experience.  He is a 4 year member of the High School Chorus and Chamber Choir.  Jacob has also qualified for District Chorus, Regional Chorus, and District Vocal Jazz Choir for 3 years in a row. He has also been involved with the Drama Department and been in productions (both musicals and plays) for 4 years.  This year, Jacob qualified for the PMEA All State Vocal Jazz Choir.  He is 1 of 24 members in the state to be selected for this ensemble.  Jacob is dedicated, caring, and responsible.  He goes the “extra mile” to ensure that not only he feels comfortable with a challenge, but will assist others to help feel comfortable as well.  Outside of school, Jacob is an active member of the Misericordia Community Choir and can often be seen and heard in local theater productions.  Jacob is a hard worker and has made a lasting impact on the Dallas High School Music Program.

The mock trial team competed Monday and Tuesday night in the District 2, Region 5 Mock Trial Competition.  In the team's first trial, the jury decided in Dallas' favor, 5-1.  During the second trial,  there was a split decision and the total number of points decided the case and Dallas lost by 1 point.

Overall, in two nights of competition they accumulated the second most points out of six teams and will be advancing to the semi-final round of District 2, Region 5 Mock Trial Competition.  The date and location for the semi-final trial is February 24th at the Luzerne County Courthouse.

In Mr. Cashman's Principles of Economics Class, students participated in a stock market competition, where groups of two invested $100,000 of simulated money in the stock market.  During the simulation, students monitored their portfolios, calculated capital gains and capital losses, and produced online notes to explain their transaction decisions in the stock market.  At the end of the simulation, students provided formal presentations to share their top performing and worst performing stocks.  The winners of Dallas High School's Stock Market Competition, Madison Pertl and Scott McLaughlin, are pictured. Madison and Scott's portfolio value increased by $20,000 during the simulation.
