Let's Move!

Since we love listening to the Frozen Soundtrack during gym class, let's work on our stretching and flexibility this week! Follow along to Cosmic Yoga!

Also, you can play "Freeze and Melt" with your siblings or parents. Find a blue object (example, a blue stuffy) and a red object (example, a red ball or toy) and move safely around the house, backyard or open area of your choice. If you have the blue object you freeze and 'tag' someone. The person with the red object melts you back to your regular state. Run, run, run! You can make the game even more fun and act out the characters from the story. Student's usually had the choice between Elsa, Anna, Olaf, Kristoff, and Hans.

If you saw our Kindergarten Story and Activity this week, you'll see we are focusing on the theme of the ocean and pirates! Here is a great dance you can follow along to for gym class!

This week in Gym (April 20-24) we are working on Gross Motor Activities – With A Ball

Using an exercise ball any small regular ball is all you need!

Learning Goal: We are learning to use our gross motor skills to control our movements.

I can...

-focus and watch the activity on the video first

-try the activity with a ball being safe with body and my surroundings

Let's Try the Wall Climb!

Now, Try the Trunk Twist if you have a sibling or parent to join you :)

Outdoor Play!

If you can find some chalk in your home, take it outside to your balcony or driveway area.

Actions/Creative Movement: Create a “game board” (the more squares you use, the longer this will last), and write different movement options in each square. Give them a rock or something to throw (that isn’t round because you don’t want it rolling once it lands) and they take turns tossing the rock onto the board. Perform that action wherever the rock lands. Some movement options are:

  • Jump in place 10 times

  • Spin around in circles

  • Name your favorite food

  • Touch your toes 10 times

  • Roar like a lion

  • Name your favourite movie

If you have room, try and create a grid of as many squares as you can. Have your child help you (or an older sibling can do this with them) write uppercase letters (A,B,C) in some of the squares and lowecase letters in others (a,b,c). Choose letters that you may notice your child is having difficulty identifying. Often our students and children can confuse 'b', 'd', 'p','q' which may be great letters to choose. When your child runs and lands onto an uppercase letter, a sibling or parent can run and land on the matching lowercase letter.

Variations:

1)Your child can listen for you to call out a letter and "uppercase" or "lowercase" and have them find the letter on the grid.

2)You can call out the sound of the letter and they must locate both uppercase and lowercase letters that match that sound by hopping their way to the letters.

3) They can run along the grid and call out the letter names and their sounds

4) You can record the letters in one column and mix up the matching lowercase letters in the second column. Ask your child to match the letters with the chalk by drawing a line.

Here is another fun way for our child to identify their letters and alphabetical order.

Let's do some stretching this week of April 27-May 1st to make sure our bodies are warmed up. Can you try and do all these stretches on the poster below?

Now, let's practise singing and moving to one of our favourite movement activities in gym class! Show your family how you know the actions and words by singing and moving safely around your home! Have fun :)
