How to Get Started Organizing Your Time
We recommend that you do the following to get started managing your time when learning at home:
Set an alarm and get out of bed in the morning.
Eat your breakfast and be ready to go online by 9:50 when in-person school is starting.
On Monday - look at your week ahead. Consider what classes you have and any upcoming due dates. We really love this weekly planner to help you do this!
Daily - Login to your class that day. See what your teacher has posted for you to do. Then, plan how you will tackle the day that is reasonable for you. For example, work for 1 hour and then take a 15 minute movement break. Work for another 45 minutes and then take a 30 minute break for lunch etc. Here is a daily planner to help you do this!
Consider the task - if it is a small assignment worth 10 marks, do not spend 5 hours on it. If it is a culminating activity, expect to spend more chunks of time on it.
Ask your teacher questions - do not hesitate to contact your teacher to ask for clarification on how long you should be spending on a task.
What to do if you are having difficulty or are feeling overwhelmed...
If you are struggling or are feeling overwhelmed, we recommend you take the following steps:
RELAX and take some deep breaths.
Take a moment to clear your head by doing an activity you enjoy like exercising, getting some fresh air, practicing yoga/meditation, listening to/playing music or drawing.
Create a list of what you need to do - you may find your list is not as long as you thought it was.
Prioritize your list - rank what you need to do from most to least important.
Contact your class teacher and ask for an extended deadline. Teachers are VERY REASONABLE about this and know how hard it can be to learn from home.
Contact a teacher from the Student Supports Department - We are very happy to help you create a plan to support you in getting caught up and/or managing your time effectively.
