This week I had to make a project calendar and filled out my project rubric according to how I plan to finish my project by the end of the school year. I worked in a google sheets and thought thoroughly about how I could create a website and skincare brand in a timely manner. Then I started a google slides where I will be putting weekly research for the rest of this semester. This week I completed my first weekly research entry. I researched the functions and parts of the human skin.
This week I emailed a doctor who works as a dermatologist to see if I could come in to shadow her at her office. I also asked her to be my mentor for when I begin making my products and having her look over my research. I also completed a weekly research entry in my google slides. This week focuses on the pH levels of a substance. I learned about the need to measure and adapt pH levels.
This week I began to set up my website for my company. I came up with our company name and started setting up my online shop on the website. I also created an email account solely for my company. Then I completed a weekly research entry in my google slides. This weeks entry focuses on the affects of using salicylic and glycolic acid on our skin. I possibly would like to use these acids in my face products.
This week I began curating a list of materials I will need when I begin experimenting and making samples of the product. I also furthered my research in order to begin making this list of materials. I learned about the different components of a good efficient facial cleanser. I did research about how I could incorporate the three key features of skincare in my cleanser. I decided I will be using glycerin, a skin-identical ingredient ,sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, the cleaning agent derived from coconut oil, and Vitamin E topical as the three key main ingredients in my face wash. The important thing about this process was doing extensive research to make sure these products will work well together. I also found my special ingredient which is willow tree bark extract.
This week I finished up my website and finished my research in google slides. I added the items in my store shop although I haven't actually made or sold them yet. I studied the essential components of a good face moisturizer which are its antioxidants, skin replenishing ingredients, sunscreen and an emollient component. I listed which ingredients in my moisturizer would account for each factor such as my antioxidant ingredient being aloe leaf extract or my skin replenishing ingredient being the Salicylic Acid 2% which is an ingredient that helps enrich skin’s surface, giving it revitalizing hydration. Unfortunately I am unable to use my original plan of packaging my products with a mason jar and a company sticker because I found out that most antioxidants and many other beneficial ingredients are sensitive to air and light. Jar packaging exposes the formula to these elements, causing them to break down and lose their effectiveness.
During this week I made my first drafts of my recipes and decided on what type of packaging to use for my products. I decided to have a 6 fl oz recipe for face wash and 2 fl oz recipe for the moisturizer. In the moisturizer recipe I decided I wanted the base to be water and Shea Butter. In my face wash, alkaline water and Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate(the cleaning agent) are my bases. I have also decided that I will use Polypropylene Plastic packaging for my products because they are 100 % recyclable and it has good chemical resistance over a wide range of bases and acids which means it is good for packaging essential oils and solvents. My next steps will be to get on a call with a skin specialist(dermatologists) so I can get feedback on my products.
Through the semester I felt like I stayed on track really well and managed my time nicely. I stuck to my calendar and project plan for the most part. I also did well at being thorough in my research and creating my brand and my website. I will commit to marketing and promoting my product and creating samples for customers. I chose to take these next steps because they are what will put me on the right track. I plan to incorporate these by making a separate social media for my business and promoting my products on my parents social media accounts who have a couple thousand followers. Once I have created my first batches of my products I will do test runs with my family members and document their results to post on social media and tweak my product accordingly. This semester I will make my project public by posting to my Instagram weekly.
This week I ordered the materials for my face moisturizer on Amazon. I also created an Instagram page for my business and emailed a business professional about good ways to market my product.
I was supposed to be creating samples for my moisturizer this week but my materials won't arrive in the mail until later on this week. But I got in contact with two professionals in business and skin this week and began to email them. I also did further research about creating an SPF 30 sunscreen and have decided to create my own homemade sunscreen for my moisturizer. The key ingredient to creating this homemade SPF is using zinc oxide ointment.
This week I created my first original batch of face product! I revised the recipe for my moisturizer and made the first batch. Prior to making this moisturizer I made my own homemade sunscreen using zinc oxide. I then used that sunscreen along with other products to make this moisturizer. In the following week I will be testing and revising my product with the help of family and friends to get feedback. I plan to continue revising this recipe. Below are videos of me creating my sunscreen and my moisturizer.
Documentation of Moisturizer results
My friend and my little brother used my product and said it was too potent and had a tingling sensation so I diluted it with more shea butter
This week I made my first batch of liquid face wash. I gave samples to my little brothers and my mom to give me feedback on the product.
At this point I have perfected my face wash recipes and have made good batches.
This week I made my label design that I will use for my stickers. I will print out a 1.5 x .5inch sticker of this design for my containers
I bought tiny mini plastic containers for packaging. I also ordered sticker sheets to use to make my own stickers to put on my packaging.
This week I took the final versions of my products and put them on my website to begin sales. I also created an advertisement video that I sent out to family and friends to begin sales
This week I progressed and made tweaks to my recipes based off of customer feedback. People said that my products were too potent and made their skin tingle. So I increased the amount of water and took out the glycolic acid in my facial wash .
I contacted a business owner and began asking her questions about advertising and making sells with my products. I am looking for my target audience.
This week I made a google site entry about the process of starting and learning my own business so far and what I have been struggling with. I am trying to figure out how to get people to buy my products.
During this week I completed with a total of 3 sales out of my goal of 10. I sold 3 moisturizers and 0 face washes.
During this week I completed with a total of 5 sales out of my goal of 10. I sold 4 moisturizers and 1 face wash.
I didn't sell anymore products this week and I continued
During this week I completed with a total of 9 sales out of my goal of 10. I sold 6 moisturizers and 3 face washes.
This week I practiced my presentation and got feedback from Ms. White. I will give my classmates my website link so they can look at it and I made tweaks to my website.
This week I presented to Ms. white and she told me to have notes for my presentation and show my physical product to the class
