Is it acceptable for parents to hit their children if the children are disobedient or need to learn a lesson? No, it is not acceptable for parents to abuse their children under any circumstance. My reasoning for this claim is evident in this quote, “Climb into the tub, Papa said again. I stepped into the tub and stood looking at him. It didn't seem that he was going to get a stick, and I felt fear, stinging and raw, filling my bladder and my ears. I did not know what he was going to do to me. It was easier when I saw a stick, because I could rub my palms together and tighten the muscles” This quote supports my claim because not only is the punishment severe and physically harming, but it can cause permanent mental issues to the human being that is not just being punished, but abused. This is shown through Kambili’s repeated experiences. The fact that Kambilli knows to tighten her muscles if she sees a stick, which is due to Papa’s abuse. In the same vein, this quote emphasizes another part of abuse, “Jaja looked down, too, as if he were just then noticing the gnarled finger, deformed like a dried stick. "Jaja had an accident," Aunty Ifeoma said, quickly. "Chima, go and get me the container of water. It is almost empty, so you can carry it." This quote emphasizes the long lasting physical aspects caused due to abuse. Both Jaja and Kambili have a scar that may never be fixed, whether mental or physical.
However, some may think that Jaja and Kambili should’ve obeyed their father’s demands and that they’re ungrateful for wanting to become more independent, but that is completely incorrect, “Because God has given you much, he expects much from you. He expects perfection.” This quote is a statement from Papa’s point of view, I chose it because it shows his reason he believes that he can abuse his children. Papa expects perfection from Kambili and Jaja, which isn’t attainable, but even when Jaja and Kambili succeed, they’re still abused by Papa. Even if they can’t be perfect, it doesn’t provide a reason for their subsequent abuse.
