Research

Craftmanship: 2" x 2" Cube Exercise

At first, I had trouble measuring the cardboard for this cube since my ruler didn't measure in sixteenths. But I figured out how to measure using a online ruler instead. I made the cube by using hot glue as well.

This design is unique to me because it has a calendar that you can change yourself. You can also see that there are compartments that you can place items.

This organizer has an emphasis on the date that you can change. It draws attention to that specific part.

This organizer really caught my attention, not only because it is made out of cardboard, which is the material we’re using, but because it shifts out.

This organizer has the principle of balance, everything comes together.

This desk organizer was very eye catching to me because of the shape and how things are organized. And the materials used are different than typical school materials.

Idea and Brainstorming

Designing with Elements and Principles of Design

This is my original element and design drawing. I used emphasis and lines.

First draft Idea

This draft idea came from my research when I first searched for desk organizers. I wanted to use unique shapes to make my organizer. But I didn't want my organizer to be too big and long in length.

This is my actual final draft drawing. When I originally made the 3D paper model, the shape didn't work out, so I changed a few things. The elements and principle design I used were space and balance.

This is my design from the front. My dimensions are labeled in the picture. My design is medium sized with dimensions of 5 1/2", 6 1/3", and 4 1/3". I chose this view because in my other 3D drawing, there was already a decent view of how my design looks. So I chose the front because that's what you see originally using the organizer.

The elements and principle design I used were space and balance. My idea came from my research when I first searched for desk organizers. At this point I wanted a simple organizer to put my belongings.

I have the really basic materials for school, like my pencils, scissors, and even more stuff. With this organizer I can use even my personal belongings to store here and grab quickly. That's also how my items helped me design this organizer.

Evaluation

This is my final model for my desk organizer. I wanted to have enough space for certain items like my pencils, scissors, my phone, and extra materials that I have from class. The cardboard material that I used was the only thing that I really had available at the time. If I wished to in the future, I would add details or color for my organizer. Before I actually even started planning my desk organizer, I had no solid idea for what I wanted it to look like. I even had to change my design twice, even after I made a cardboard model for my very first idea. But after researching and finding inspiration, this is what I came up with.

When we originally did feedback in class, there wasn't really any feedback that I was going to use since that was a old 3D model for my original idea. But I could take some advice for the size, since our organizer had to be 10" x 10" x 10". The idea and brainstorming in this project is what I really had trouble with, since I change my mind easily over things. After I finally figured out what I wanted my design to look like, Prototyping was very simple to me, along with the final product. If I could change anything about my design, it would be the lack of color.
