This part-time job, hired by BuildingStars, included the commercial cleaning of high-end furniture outlets and various company offices. The cleaning of antique and consignment shops was difficult physically, but we also had to be very precise in how we cleaned, depending on the owners' wishes and the value of the pieces. I also had to learn how to work around others in order to get my job done.
My first dance intensive of the summer was focused on Ballet, HipHop, Modern, and Jazz. During this week, I had the privilege of studying under many different artists from across the country, including the following:
Kyri Hayes
Nacoleon Hillsman III
Angie Wells
Toya Willingham
During the month of April, I received my first package of Italian bees in order to start my own personal apiary. This also reminded me of Drew's personal apiary, which had been completely abandoned over the course of the pandemic. When I went to check on the hives, all but one had been abandoned & virtually destroyed. I contacted a family friend, Dr. Jennifer Leavey, to get her opinion on the status and health of the hive. While we were unable to save the infested & dying hive, she gave me the opportunity to join her for an internship over the summer.
Jennifer Leavey is a principal academic professional in the School of Biological Sciences and assistant dean for Faculty Mentoring for the College of Sciences. She also coordinates the College's educational programs related to science and sustainability including the Georgia Tech Urban Honey Bee Project and the Living Building Science Vertically Integrated Project Team. Dr. Leavey's child, Jacob, is part of Decatur High's 2022 class and is part of their International Bacalorett program, which requires a final project before graduation. This final project was based on the movement & activity of honey bees and how their DNA may affect this.
During the course of my internship, Jacob and I collected non-destructive DNA sampling via wing, leg, and antenna samples. We collected these samples from newly hatched worker bees(females - bees that sting). By breaking these samples down we were able to collect DNA. Furthermore, after we collected DNA, we attached RFID chips onto the bees via a superglue adhesive. Throughout the bees' 40 day lifecycle, the data received from the RFID chips are collected and determines how often they leave the hive and for how long their away. We are also looking into the correspondence with those bees that had missing parts(wingtips, legs, antennae) versus those that didn't have any DNA sampling taken.
During my two-week JAM intensive, I studied modern, contemporary, hip-hop, jazz, and acrobatics. I had the privilege to study under the following teachers:
