For our first 9th grade literature project, we have created Empathy Collages to build a connection between a character from the work, "The Odyssey," and a person from the modern world. My collage compared how Penelope, Odysseus's wife, was taken advantage of when he is away, and women in the modern world to get their voices heard. In the Odyssey, Odysseus leaves to complete a quest, and Penelope is left behind. Soon after, suitors come to her home to take her hand in marriage, not knowing that she was already married. By the time Odysseus returns, many suitors are already in her home. This shows that Penelope did not appear to have independent rights, or rather, wasn't heard by the suitors, showing that women back then were not given independent rights or abilities. Like Penelope, women are often not heard from the sea that is the corrupt society and major offices. While women are more independent and represented more in the present than in the past, but are still less heard than men.
