Newtons Cradle
In class today, we made a Newton’s Cradle. The goal was to demonstrate Newton’s laws of motion while also using elements of art like balance, shape, and rhythm. . First, we got about 25 popsicle sticks, 7 strings, 7 marbles, glue, and tape. Second, we built a stand for the cradle using 12 sticks. Then, we glued the strings to the marbles and taped them to the top of the stand. After that, we glued popsicle sticks on the inside to create a floor. Finally, we added sticks on top of the strings to keep them from moving.
The first step involved shape, form, and balance, which are part of the elements of art and principles of design. The second step, taping the marbles with strings, showed balance and space because we had to line them up evenly. Adding the floor showed repetition since we used the same sticks over and over. When you pull the marbles back and release them, it creates a rhythm as they swing back and forth.
