What is Borax? Borax is a salt, a hydrated borate of Sodium. It's a white substance.
What chemical elements or compounds are in it? Boron, sodium, and oxygen are in borax.
Why do you use hot water? Boiling hot water allows more borax to dissolve to create the desired supersaturated solution.
What happens as the water cools? When the water cools to a low temperature it will decrease the dissolve amount of the borax.
