Throughout this unit, students read about two young environmental activists, Marley Copeni, a.k.a. Little Miss Flint and Greta Thunberg. Our first graders realize that they can create change by joining forces with elected officials to fight for a common cause. So, they wrote letters to express their concerns about the environment and suggested possible solutions to the Mayor's Office of Sustainability and Resilience. Deputy Sustainability Officer, Mr. Seydel, spoke on Chief Sustainability Officer Chandra Farley's behalf, and graciously met with our students to hear their concerns. It was a wonderful experience for all parties, and Mr. Seydel was moved by the students' passion for the environment.
Mrs. Trina Matta serves as the Director of Circular Ventures for The Recycling Partnership. She joined first grade on Zoom to share her expertise on all things recycling. She shared lots of important information about what recycling is, what items are able to be recycled, and what happens to the items that we recycle.
Georgia Institute of Technology EcoCAR
First graders participated in conversations with Georgia Tech's EcoCAR Collegiate Competition team about the importance of eco-friendly vehicles that utilize electricity rather than fossil fuels. Students also sketched their own eco-friendly car design that uses electricity and carries multiple passengers. In addition, the College of Engineering students provided first grade an up-close and personal tour of the EcoCAR's internal components.
National Weather Service - Meteorologists
Meteorologists, Kevin Sullivan, Paige Bagget, and Marvin Percha, spoke to the students about the different types of weather, severe weather, and weather safety. The students had great questions and were moved by the weather stories the meteorologists shared with them.
