My artist statement:
I think the main element of this project that went well was our Epic. It was well thought out and many hours went into it. I also feel as though our research behind the element we chose was accurate and thorough. The most difficult thing for us was finding the motivation to get it done. I also personally struggled with making the backgrounds of the animation look accurate. We could improve by spending more time on character design in the animation. Our project really taught me the value of communication and collaboration with people. I feel as though our project was mildly successful. We finished on time and committed to each part of the project, but some parts felt incomplete or not perfect. As the teacher, I would try to allow a bit more time to work and fewer outside assignments. I really feel like most of the stress really just fell on things outside of anyone's control.
We created as skit for Heritage month to highlight ways to flirt in Spanish. This project really helped me to explore my acting abilities outside of live performances and the ways to build off of my second language.
Using my knowledge of figurative language, I wrote a clever rap and performed it to a beat in front of my peers.
As an introduction to photography I took the liberty of practicing prospective and capturing objects. I feel as though I effectively presented the spirit of fall.
In world history, we learned about antient civilizations and then made bricks with traditional methods. This helped us to solve the mystery of why civilizations had such uniform structures such as the pyramids. It incorporated art into this fun and interactive exercise.
In chemistry, we have been discussing the different types of bonds. These bonds include ionic, covalent, and metallic. Covalent bonding is responsible for the bonding of dyes and paints to papers, fabric, etc. My art above shows the covalent molecule H2O, or water. I chose to do this because I interact with it every day and had a specific image of a seal in mind. My art includes various different colors and transparency levels.
I made an art piece to comment on the impact that disposable period products have on our environment. Plastics are made from the covalent bonding of polymers, which is not something our earth is equipped to break down. In addition to plastic, I used recycled paper. Big corporations are chopping down trees and extracting plant proteins (cellulose) at a rate that puts these trees in danger. I used variety and balance to make my piece visually appealing. First, I sketched my design and researched what statistic I wanted to bring to light. Then, I used weaving to make plarn into a pad. Lastly, I used recycled paper and yarn to add any finishing touches and a background for the pad. The most difficult part of this process was figuring out a way to transfer the text onto my paper properly. Overall I am happy with the design and I’m not sure I would change anything.
Here is clip from my 2021 winter concert in chorus. I think our sound quality was good and our work on blending really showed through. In addition, I enjoy the inclusion of instruments outside of the piano. My one wish would be that I moved around less. This is something I will work towards improving.
I created a piece of art centered around a hydrogen peroxide molecule. I did this in order to connect the skills I have been developing in art and chemistry. One skill I'd say rings most important in art is the principles of design. I used balance, proportion, and movement. I did a landscape piece because I felt my molecule looked like some sort of insect. I think animators and designers may use some of the digital tools I have learned. This makes me feel proud of what I have accomplished.
I researched the chemical properties of chalk and the way we can use them to create art. Doing this gave me a lot of inspiration for our upcoming PBL project "ReARTions". I could create a sidewalk mural and spray acid on it or do hand lettering while dessolving parts of the text with rainwater. I feel this project will give us many opportunities to discover passions.
The Columbian exchange was an exchange of food, diseases, people, and animals from one hemisphere to another. Religion was also transferred. Because of the disease that was transferred, it is clear that this wasn’t a very fair trade. For this project, we had to create a dish using ingredients that were from our hemisphere. I was from the west, so I brought both sweet and regular potatoes. It quickly became frustrating trying to put all our ingredients together. This taught me just how impactful the trade was on the modern world. Without essential foods, it's hard to do much of anything.
I researched the chemical reactions of sugar and the ways they can be used to yield art. I made many interesting discoveries, like the fact it can be used to make complicated structures and that it is an antient painting medium. I work at a bakery, so I will definitely be using these findings.
I designed a book cover for my unfinished novel with all the elements of art in mind. I chose to make it very rustic and thought provoking to go with the looming mystery of the bear that can be found in my story. In addition, I included a contrast between the darker wood texture and the light paper material. This cover means trouble is ahead in the most surprising places.
Throughout the book writing process we were told to document our feelings and the progress we were making. In the begging I was feeling optimistic but nervous as I was searching for writing inspiration. As you can see, in the middle I was feeling optimistic but a little bit rushed. In the end I was left almost disappointed with my lack of progress. I learned a valuable lesson though, you can't force writing you'll be proud of.
My choral ensemble went and preformed at Large Group Performance Evaluation. I felt we sounded pretty good, though I wish the altos reserved their voices at bit more on their suspensions. In addition, I feel we could've watched the conducting better to be together on the fermatas and beginning ooooooooooo's. Overall, I am pleased with the performance
Next, we preformed Deo Decamos Gracias. I feel we were all together for each section. I think our decision to grow on the piano section was the right one, but I understand the need to be technical for these things. Hearing us sound so blended was really good encouragement.
I created a set of Acrylic nails using fake nails, UV cured nail polish, and rhinestones adhered with super glue. Most of these materials involve chemical reactions. Nail polish is made with a powerful combination of oxygen and nitrogen. When polymers are dissolved in a powerful solvent, nail polish is formed. The color within the oxidizers when exposed to air can alter its overall appearance. The change in state of matter, creation of scent, and change in color all indicate reactions. To add on to this I will use a polish that is cured with light. In addition, superglue if formed with chains of polymers that adhere to anions on the nail. The change in matter, loss of smell, and change inconsistency show a change. Lastly, nail polish remover works hard to break down the chemical composition of nail polish. One substance changing the chemical composition of another shows change. During this process, I learned how to use different tools such as the dotting tool and small line brushes. I also learned that substances are added to nail polish to change its look. Lastly, I learned the power that acetone hold. You wont get the same effect with water. I tried to consider variety in my art by adding a 3-d component and accent nails. I also used unity by combining complementary colors that are found in nature. In addition I used pattern by doing repetitive yellow flowers. This project taught me many important chemistry and art concepts.
My group and I created a propaganda poster to go along with our PBL. We used Pathos to appeal to emotions and convince our users to support Women's rights. In addition, we used Bandwagon to y that everyone is in on it. Lastly, my group created a video to elaborate on these concepts.
As a class, we combined our fragments of a Guernica painting to make a complete piece. We got to arrange each fragment to ensure the values and color made sense next to each other. This was a very challenging but rewarding assignment
