At Sheltering Arms, I was a volunteer assistant teacher in a virtual pre-k class from April 2020 to August 2020. My responsibilities included reading stories to the kids on a virtual platform while coming up with creative ways to keep students so young engaged (I would dress up as different characters, and do activities that with parent's assistance, could be done at home, I taught virtual dance classes as apart of the preschool's music and movement virtual classes, and I did light clerical work from home.
I also assisted with center events at Sheltering Arms from October 2021 to Present. My responsibilities include setting up and breaking down after events, manning tables, organizing and leading games and activities for children and families, getting other student volunteers signed up to help with events, signing attendees in and out for the day, Helping in classrooms for children 6 weeks to 5 years old, and helping with decorating classrooms to reflect the theme of the month, serving snacks and wiping down tables and chairs before and after snack time, working with children on arts and crafts, reading stories during circle time and carpet time, assisting teachers with child supervision outside on the playground, creating and playing fun outdoor games with. the children inside and outside, working in the after-school program for Head Start classrooms.
In partnership with Kaboom, the East Lake YMCA was given a grant to build a new playground. I volunteered in July 2023 to help with the preparations that were needed before the build was to begin. My responsibilities included hoveling in areas, getting other teen volunteers to sign up to assist (I was successful in getting 30 additional volunteers to join), cleaning up at the end of the day, taking photos during the prep work, and submitting them for the YMCA and East Lake Foundation newsletter.
