DIS 25th Anniversary Debating Tournament

May 7-8, 2022

Message from Our Principal

Welcome to the Dresden International School inaugural debating tournament!

In an increasingly opinionated and divided world, the skills that our students will showcase this weekend are ones that many adults could do with learning. Engaging with formal debate allows our students to inquire, act and reflect upon the world around them. This commitment to international mindedness is one that, as an IB World School, we encourage in and out of the classroom. Our school motto is 'World Citizens made in Dresden' - I cannot think of a better example of how we build Global Citizens than through debating. Over the course of this weekend, students will research and discuss issues of personal, local and global importance. Through the format of debate, they will develop an understanding of and respect for the similarities and differences of individuals and people, as well as demonstrating an understanding of multiple perspectives of the issues they are debating. Although the competition will be held in English, our international students bring a wealth of languages that help them to think and communicate across cultures. They will be practicing the skills that will make them successful leaders and communicators in the future.

Thank you for joining us in what I hope will become an annual event in the life of our school.

Jennifer Tickle
Secondary School Principal
