An Introduction to Ensemble Recorder, with Safiyya al-Zarqa' bint Garsiyya al-Isbili
Have you started to learn the recorder, but want the chance to play in a group? If you can read music and know how to play the notes on the stave, you're halfway there! This friendly class will be a chance to practice playing together, and will include some simple tunes to get you started that you can take away with you.
An Introduction to Early Drumming, with Maredudd ap Gwylim
A practical, hands-on class teaching the basics of drumming: how to hold the sticks, how to do a drum roll, some basic rhythms, etc.
Who are the Folk?, with Ariel of Lindisfarne
What most people consider to be 'traditional folk music' actually is more 18th or 19th century. However, there are some 'traditional' songs that date back to SCA period -- even a handful of Child ballads work for us. Find out what they are and learn to sing some.
Verse Plays, with Alexandre d'Avignon
We'll talk about verse plays. For this class, this means English language, iambic pentameter blank verse, the play form created by Kit Marlowe, and later popularised by other Elizabethan dramatists. We'll approach it as a spoken form, since plays are intended to be performed, and look at some of the ways the verse informs performance. We might talk about other stuff, too, time and interest permitting.
"According to her singing, not her face”: Top tips for success in the courts of Al Andalus, with Safiyya al-Zarqa' bint Garsiyya al-Isbili
Sayyida Safiyya will provide her top tips for a career as a court singer in Andalus - come and find out what you need to make it
Things That Go Bump In the Night: Telling Spooky Stories, with Alessandra di Riario
How to captivate your audience and build tension when telling scary tales. There will also be a chance to prepare your own stories.
There will also be:
Scratch band practice & dance practice, with Leofrun of Flintheath
Not a class per se, but an opportunity to play a variety of period ensemble dance music (bring your own instruments) and/or learn dances. People are also welcome to teach or call other dances in this session - please bring sheet music for musicians!
