Meet the Director
A true believer in the benefits of the an Arts Education, Mr. Stokes ensures that members in the band program develop into productive members of society. Mr. Stokes began his tenure at SSES in the summer of 2014. As the longest tenured Director of Bands at Southern, Mr. Stokes has been an music educator for nearly 12 years.
Educational Background: Proud Alumnus of Elizabeth City State University in both Music Engineering and Music Education
Currently enrolled in the Masters of Music Education at UNC-Greensboro.
Prior to teaching in Durham Public Schools Mr. Stokes was Director of Bands in Washington County, NC at both Plymouth High and Washington County Union Middle Schools.
Ensemble Offerings:
The Symphonic Soul of the South's "Spartan Legion" Marching Band: An experience like no other. The marching offers students the opportunity to develop skills in musicianship, showmanship, drive, accountability, a family away from home, lifelong friends, plenty of opportunities to travel distant and locally to perform. We are one of the major ambassadors of our school's pride, sound, and vision for all the possibilities that are offered as SSES.
Concert Band: Truly the ensemble that follows marching band that band members are allowed to hone the musical ability and bring life to some of the world's gorgeous music. Students usually improve musically through this ensemble following marching band.
Jazz Band: A Higher Level and smaller Ensemble that explores the vast world of jazz music. Students will be feel the reward of their instrumental growth through playing music by some of the genres great composers.
Pep/Tour Band: A smaller ensemble that serves to perform for a variety of event on behalf of the schools. Events include our annual EOG tour which performs for multiples schools in the triangle area prior to state testing to boost academic moral. We also perform for events held at the school (open house, athletic events, school ceremonies)
