What is AVID?
Nationwide, AVID is a college preparatory program for students who are historically underrepresented. More than 2 million students participate in AVID programs across the country at thousands of schools. AVID helps students who want to go to college but need additional support to truly be successful at the university level.
The most important feature of AVID is the AVID Elective class. Students take a year-long elective course all four years of high school to build their academic skills, social connections, and emotional supports to be college and career ready.
Riverside is thrilled to bring AVID back to our campus with a new class of 9th grade students in 2024-2025. AVID will provide our students with access to address their opportunity gaps and accelerate their development so they will graduate with the knowledge and skills to be active members of their community in college and beyond.
How can AVID support me?
AVID is unique because it is an in-school program that students participate in all four years. Students take a year-long elective that includes organizational skills, tutorials, and enrichment opportunities like field trips and guest speakers.
AVID targets students in the "academic middle." They will often be the first in their family to attend college. Students have the potential to take rigorous courses but need support to be successful in them.
AVID teachers receive additional training on the best practices to support students in their individual growth.
AVID serves as a home base and community for students that makes a large school feel smaller so they can receive the academic support, mentoring, and social-emotional development they need.
