AVID focuses on students in the "academic middle." AVID students are capable of earning a diploma and meeting the requirements to go to college but are not yet performing to their full potential.
The future AVID Student...
is a rising 9th or 10th grader in 2024-2025
is willing to work hard and has "individual determination" to be successful
is interested in attending a 4 year university after high school
has grades in the A-D range
is in the academic middle
will possibly be the first person in their family to attend or graduate from college
may be a member of a historically underrepresented group
What do you mean a "historically underrepresented group member"?
In 2021 the national average college graduation rate was 55%. For students who are the first in their family to attend college and come from a low income family the graduation rate is just 11%.
Historically speaking we know that it is more challenging for some students to attend college. Research shows this is especially true for students who....
are people of color or racial/ ethnic minorities
are from a family with economic disadvantages or whose parents did not attend college
Together with a student's individual desire to succeed and family support, AVID can help change the story.
For students who participated in AVID, the college graduation rate improves to 42%.
We are seeking students who have potential but may also have special circumstances that could be obstacles to their success
AVID is for EVERYONE
AVID should reflect the school it serves. Participation in one of our magnet programs (such as PLTW and ROTC) or need of student support services (such as EC or ESL) does not prevent you from joining AVID. We believe all students deserve support and we are working hard with our school administration and counselors to schedule our classes so that AVID is accessible to all students who want to participate.
Under special circumstances we will accept students who do not meet one or more of the criteria above.
March-April 2024: Rising 9th and 10th grade students apply. Our counselors will be visiting Brogden and Carrington to meet students and families during registration events. If you attend a school other than Brogden or Carrington, please watch the video above to receive more information about our AVID program and fill out an application. For more information please contact our AVID Coordinator, Ms. Lewis, at erina_lewis@dpsnc.net
Friday, April 5, 2024: AVID application and recommendation letter due.
Monday, April 8, 2024: AVID Interest Session at Riverside High School from 5:30-7:00 pm
Late April 2024: Students and families will be notified of acceptance into AVID.
Monday, August 26th, 2024: FIRST DAY OF AVID!
We encourage students to complete this application with a family member. We anticipate it will take 20-30 minutes to complete.
Each AVID student needs one recommendation form. Please ask a teacher, counselor, coach or other adult (non-family member) who knows you well to complete the form on your behalf. Recommendations are confidential and due April 5, 2024.
Do you know of a rising 9th grader at Riverside High School who would be a good candidate for AVID? Please share their information with us so we can contact their family about the benefits of our program and help them apply.
