Welcome to 5th Grade Writing! My name is Mr. Bryant, and I am excited to be your teacher this year. I love books, spooky stories, science fiction, and spending time with my three poodles, Roland, Jolene, and Hendrix. My goal is to help you discover your voice and become a confident writer.
We will explore a variety of writing genres throughout the year, including personal narratives, informational writing, opinion writing, poetry, and creative writing. Students will learn how to organize their ideas, support their thinking with evidence, strengthen their grammar and conventions, and revise their work like real authors.
Essential Question: What makes an excellent personal narrative?
Write a narrative about a time you experienced something for the very first time. Describe what happened, how you felt before, during, and after the experience, and what made the moment memorable.
Many people think advanced civilizations only existed in Europe and Asia. Write an essay explaining why the Maya, Aztec, and Inca civilizations were also complex and innovative societies.
Write an original poem inspired by one or more poems from this unit. Use at lest three poetic devices we studied (such as similie, metaphor, repetition, symbolism, rhyme, alliteration, or imagery). Then write a short author's reflection explaining the choices you made and how your poem was influenced by the unit's poems.
Do you think Don Quixote is brave and heroic, or foolish and dangerous? Write a persuasive essay explaining your opinion using evidence from the text.
Research a famous Renaissance artist, inventor, or writer and write a biography explaining how that person influenced the Renaisance. Use evidence from at least two sources to support your ideas.
Imagine you are living during the Reformation. Write a friendly letter explaining whether you support or oppose the changes happening in Europe. Use details from the unit to explain your opinion.
Imagine you are the "Course Smoother" advice columnist. Write a reponse to one character from "A Midsummer Night's Dream" explaining how they could have avoided the confusion and chaos in the play. Use evidence from the text to support your answer.
How did the land shape the traditions, culture, and daily lives of Native American tribes? Write an essay using examples from the unit to explain your thinking.
