Typically 36 months.
Most WGU education bachelor's degree students finish in just 36 months. As a student at WGU, you'll benefit from our competency-based learning model. It allows you to determine how fast you advance through your degree program - you can take assessments and prove mastery of the material as soon as you're ready. If you can dedicate extra time to your studies, or draw on existing knowledge and experience, you can accelerate your time to graduation, saving both time and money.
As part of your program you will complete student teaching. Student teaching is an important element of a bachelor's degree in education that prepares you for actual work in the classroom. In student teaching, you work with a licensed educator inside a classroom to understand what it is really like to work with students every day. You will teach lessons, help students who are struggling, give assignments, and more as part of your student teaching experience.

CU Denver proudly offers two different pathways for teacher candidates who want to work full or part time in classified positions while pursuing their teaching license, P-TAP and NxtGEN. The length of time to complete the bachelor's degree is flexible and will vary for each individual depending on the preferred course load as well as previous college credits completed and work experience. CU Denver offers a generous transfer policy as well as offering credit for prior learning for those that have held instructional paraprofessional positions for a number of years.
P-TAP (Paraprofessional to Teacher Advancement Pathway) is a flexible undergraduate pathway to complete a bachelor's degree with teacher licensure. Participants in the P-TAP program are typically already employed in a paid paraprofessional position. Throughout the program they are able to use that position to meet field experience requirements and to complete course assignments. Courses are offered after 5:00 p.m. in CU Denver's "boundaryless" (online, distance, or remote) modality to support full time employment while completing courses.
For those who want to work while pursuing their teaching license but do not currently have a full time para position, we offer the NxtGEN program. NxtGEN, an educator preparation program co-designed by Denver Public Schools (DPS) and the University of Colorado Denver (CU Denver), has been elevated in a U.S. Department of Education fact sheet as one of eight teacher education programs in the country addressing the teacher shortage and increasing the number of teachers prepared for diverse classrooms. NxtGEN provides a four-year undergraduate teacher residency and degree. The program selects approximately 35 students per year, prioritizing positions for first generation college students and BIPOC candidates in order to intentionally create a diverse pipeline of teacher candidates who can imagine, persevere, and lead education into the future. Teacher candidates are hired into paid, part-time paraeducator intern positions in DPS schools during their first, second, or third years. They transition into full-time paid residencies during their senior year.
