If your child has been designated Magnet Eligible (ME), they have scored in the 95th percentile or above on a cognitive assessment, but do not yet have all of the other required pieces in the body of evidence to receive a formal identification. The Magnet Eligible (ME) designation does not automatically mean that a student has been determined HGT. The GT teachers will be actively working toward a formal HGT identification once a student has the ME designation.
Since collecting the body of evidence for formal HGT identification may take time, the ME designation serves as a placeholder, allowing families the opportunity to go through the School Choice process to place an HGT Magnet site as one of their school choice options.
The Magnet Eligibility designation is not a formal identification. Students who are ME do not receive an Advanced Learning Plan (ALP).
Who can be Magnet Eligible?
Students need to score in the 95th percentile or higher on a cognitive test to qualify for Magnet Eligibility (ME)
What happens after becoming Magnet Eligible?
Once eligible, families may take part in the School Choice process to pick preferred magnet schools. A lottery is conducted in the first round, and the second round is on a first-come, first-served basis.
Will a Magnet Eligible student need to retest for placement?
ME status never expires—your child can apply to magnet schools at any time while enrolled with DPS.
Will my child need additional tests with a Magnet Eligible status?
ME students will not need another cognitive test for magnet eligibility while in DPS. However, additional achievement tests may be used later for a full HGT identification
