Curriculum

Our school follows the district curriculum guidelines. Our literacy curriculum is new this year and comes from Amplify CKLA. We will continue using Writing Alive for our writing curriculum. For math, we are using Engage New York and supplementing as needed. Science comes from Amplify as well, it has three units: Plant and Animal Relationships, Properties of Materials, and Changing Landforms. Our social studies curriculum is also new this year, it has three units: Meeting Needs and Wants, Our Changing Landscapes, and Innovation.  As a school, we are continuing to strive towards meeting all of our student’s unique needs through personalized learning.

Rules and Expectations

Our hope is for our classes to be a safe place where my students can learn while having a good time. We expect students to own their classroom and show respect for their classmates, classroom supplies, and adults. We tell my students that my hope is for them to become independent learners and thinkers. I am there as a coach but they need to do the work.  I will help them through the process and we will learn from each other. We like to set very clear expectations and routines during the beginning of the school year so that our classroom can run effectively and we can spend most of our time learning.

The students will be expected to practice the school-wide Character Education Program:

C – Community Minded

A – Aware of your surroundings and what you are doing

R – Responsible and Respectful for your actions and learning

E – Empathetic toward others

S – Always be Safe

Classroom Management

Thank you in advance for supporting our classroom management system!  The goal is to keep our classroom environment efficient, positive, and safe.  This plan is subject to change throughout the year depending on the needs of our classroom, and those changes will be communicated as needed.

Class Dojo: Class Dojo will be used to communicate behavior among other things. Please check this daily!

Fun Friday: Fun Friday will be held before specials on Fridays. Students who earn it will be able to have fun free time in the classroom for about 20 minutes. Students earn Fun Friday if:

Students who did not earn Fun Friday will be using the time to finish their classwork and reflect on their behavior as needed.

Pick-up and Dismissal

Students will be picked up and dismissed by the stairs next to the library.  Students will not be dismissed until the teacher has made eye contact with the parents.  If your child is going home with someone other than yourself, please let your child's teacher know.  If by any chance you are running late (after 3:30 pm) and you don't see us at our dismissal spot, please come to the office to sign your student out.

Snacks and Water Bottles

The students are welcome to bring a quick and easy snack.  Some suggestions for snacks include fruit, animal crackers, pretzels, gogurts, string cheese, or anything fun. The students always enjoy this time of day and they continue to work while munching.  Make sure that your child brings a labeled water bottle to school for use in the classroom.

Birthday Treats

DPS policy states that treats must be store-bought and individually wrapped.  Peanut and tree-nut-free, please.  The treats will be distributed during our class snack time. If your child has a food allergy that might conflict with birthday treats, please let me know so that we can coordinate an alternate treat stash for your child.

Book Orders

During various times of the year, book orders from Scholastic will be sent home.  Through those orders, classroom teachers receive bonus points which then can be used to replace and add books to the classroom library. Book orders can be done online once the flyers have been sent home. A note will go home with your parent's log-in and the date to order.

Be sure to use our class code when you order!
