The Saddest Goodbye... Ashland

In 1976 on the campus of Denver North High School was a sad farewell. Denver Public Schools had torn down the former home of Denver North High School which was housed on the third floor of Ashland Elementary School. North was housed in the building betw from 1883 and moved into the new edition in 1911. But since 1872 Ashland Elementary School had been serving the North Denver community, but it was torn down to make room for Valdez Elementary School.

Homecoming's in the 1970's...

The homecomings in the 1970’s were the same as they are now, in the homecoming of 1976 Denver North High School had beaten the West High Cowboys 40-0. During the 70’s another tradition had started, homecoming floats and the annual homecoming parade turn North High School had became a big tradition starting in the 1970's. it showed off great school spirit for North High School and for the North Denver Community.

The 80's !!!

In the 1980’s Denver North High School saw some changes. In the early 1980’s Denver Public Schools had announced the ninth grade will be joining the high school level, the first freshman class to join North High School in 1983 had almost a thousand students from a combination of Skinner Junior High School, Lake Junior high school and Horace Mann Junior High School (This is the same time the switch from Junior High School to Middle School occurred). But also in 1983 Denver North High School had finished construction on its brand new edition, this edition would comprise a 15 brand new classrooms, a state-of-the-art auditorium and a beautiful 1st floor cafeteria. The first few years the edition did help the massive numbers of students that entered North High School in the early 80’s but by the late 80’s and into the early 90’s Denver North High School started seeing less and less kids. Throughout that time there were less students coming to North High School, we had a big drop. But with the 80s North High School had growth under principle Lino Gonzalez we had more spirited homecomings, celebrations and sporting events. The 1980’s had brought with it students with school spirit. In the front hallway of the brand-new North High School edition principal Lino Gonzalez put under it a time capsule, exactly 50 years after that time capsule was planted it will be pulled up and shown to Viking students. It will show what life was like during that historical day for North High School.

The Time Capsule will be opened September 6th 2036.

The old Parking Lot

This photo was taken of the Denver North High School parking lot in 1980, it is still in the same place it was in 1980 but they moved it back for the new edition that would be added in 1982.

Our Beautiful Home...

Principal Lino P. Gonzales

This historic photo was taken on the day the brand new Denver North High School edition opened in 1983. But below Principal Gonzales sits the Denver North High School time capsule. The Time capsule will be open exactly 50 years from that opening day in 1983.

Just Like The Good Old Day's

Denver North High School in the 1980’s was like an end of an era, the years before you walk through the hallways and everything stayed the same. That all changed in the 80’s, North High School had gotten rid of its auditorium and had permanently changed the face of North High School. All the years after depending on what decade you're from you would remember different rooms from North High School that no longer exist. If you're from after 2011 you remember a state-of-the-art building that shines in the glory of the Original North High School. and if you're from classes from the late 80’s and early 90’s you remember a counseling center that's sat in the space of the former beautiful auditorium.

New story on it's way...

Photo's from 80's Homecoming's

Here are homecoming photos from through out the 1980's.

What a different time...

Here is a photo from Federal and Speer, during the era before the 90s the corner of Federal and Speer was busy with stores, restaurants and places for North High School students. Before Viking Park was turned into a park it was a district of stores and houses. One of many famous restaurants to sit directly on that corner where Subway sits today was Georgy’s. On the west side of Federal would sit a Ford dealership on the east side where Chase Bank is today sat a Chevy dealership. Both would be famous in their time. (Murphy Mahoney Chevrolet, Hover Ford).

North High School Turns 100 1883-1983

On September 6th 1883 Denver North Side High School opened its doors for the very first time, on September 6th 1983 Denver North High School did the same thing all over again. In 1983 Denver North celebrated 100 years by opening a brand new edition. On that day Denver's mayor Federico Pena came to celebrate the brand new building and came to celebrate the hundredth anniversary of Denver North High School. Denver North also celebrated in 1986 the first graduating class, because in the early day's there were High School was 3 years.
