TAPS (Traditional Arts Programs for Students) provides community organizations (arts centers, schools, community centers) with funding for after-school programs that unite North Carolina elementary and middle school students with local traditional artists. Taught by experts utilizing traditional instructional techniques, students receive training in strong local, vernacular artistic traditions that have deep cultural roots in their community. TAPS applications are available by invitation only.

TAPS programs include the popular Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM) afterschool programs that provide a growing number of North Carolina students with the opportunity to learn the music of their region from master players. Master musicians offer students instruction on the fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin and other instruments. Students learn to play traditional tunes by ear and to perform together in small groups. JAM programs are affiliates of JAMKids.org.
