#3 Potential Roadblocks and Solutions

Roadblock: Lack of staff time for daily check-ins.

Solution: Leadership makes daily check-in a priority and sets expectation of time commitment for this purpose.

Roadblock: Teachers are not prepared to provide core social emotional learning for all students and/or lack understanding of how concern connects with existing MTSS supports.

Solution: District and school team consider current SEL implementation and online learning options to address gaps. District and school teams can register for the Core SEL Practices course through the District MTSS Coordinator. All educators can enroll in Social and Emotional Learning for Educators through August 2020. School team can access CASEL Guide to Schoolwide SEL to support implementation, and the district team can access the District Resource Center to support implementation.

Roadblock: Staff lack time to follow-up on student concerns or lack skills to provide adequate follow-up.

Solution: Clear data decision rules regarding student follow-up and support for Specialized Instructional Support Personnel (SISP) staff.

Roadblock: Staff is unclear when additional support is needed.

Solution: Clear data decision rules and a resource map.

Roadblock: Student/family technology access issues, teacher technology learning curve.

Solution: Utilize district/school technology needs assessment data to prioritize resources. Adapt when limited available technology. If using a digital form, consider selected staff entering data on students via phone call to student/family.

Roadblock: Lack of data decision rules.

Solution: SISP staff create data decision rules using guidelines.

Roadblock: Lack continuum of support.

Solution: Include national hotlines in crisis protocol and Resource Map.

Roadblock: SISP staff are unable to find students who are at risk and repeatedly absent.

Solution: Consider additional staff who are trained to complete a home visit (i.e., School Resource Officer) and communication with Homeless Education Liaison or other supports that might help to locate student.

Roadblock: SISP staff lack adequate time for check-ins.

Solution: Time built in schedule to allow staff to provide interventions - Complete resource mapping and prioritize staff time/resources.

Roadblock: Student absent.

Solution: Identify any patterns in students' attendance and schedule accordingly.

Roadblock: Student moves out of district

Solution: Share support plan with new district.

Roadblock: Teacher not aware of data or available resources.

Solution: Train teachers in data that indicates concern (red flags), resource mapping, and how to connect students to resources.

Roadblock: Teachers are not prepared to provide core social emotional learning for all students.

Roadblock: Lack of consistent communication with community providers.

Solution: Follow steps to set up a consistent communication loop.

Roadblock: School system has consistent designated status check in staff, but provider does not have dedicated staff for this purpose.

Solution: Contact Local System of Care Coordinator to determine appropriate provider contact.

Roadblock: School does not have release of information form.

Solution: Communicate need with Student Support Services. Consider utilizing/adapting example Release of Information.

Roadblock: Unable to get Release of Information to/from parent/guardian.

Solution: Consider a safe method for Social Workers, Behavior Liaison, or other appropriate staff to assist with getting a signed release of information (adapted home visit, electronic method).

Roadblock: Communication loop not established with local provider(s).

Solution: Consider Enhanced Strategy #2 Strategic check-in for Students at Risk.

Roadblock: Consistent communication loop not established with local provider(s).

Solution: Consider Enhanced Strategy #2 Strategic check-in for Students at Risk

Roadblock: Uncertain of appropriate guidelines at local, state, and/or national level.

Solution: Consult relevant resources.

Roadblock: Administration uncertain of how to implement safety strategies without creating panic for students, families, and staff.

Solution: Provide recommendations to administrators on how to communicate with a calm urgency, appropriate EAP resources for staff

Roadblock: Staff lack training/knowledge of protocol.

Solution: Identify training needs and provide virtual training as needed.
