RECOMMENDATION #3: Formalize protocol for student check-ins that are coordinated across staff and families

Universal Check-Ins

Schools provide daily check-ins at the beginning of class or 1st period as part of defined core instruction. This creates an opportunity for teachers to have an understanding of where students are emotionally each day. Teachers trained in Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA), for example, will be equipped for these check-ins. If further follow up needs to be completed they can reach out to support staff etc. Check-in can occur via check in form, in real time via virtual platform, or face to face. Teach teachers how to notice symptoms of distress during virtual learning.

For more information about DPI-sponsored YMHFA training, contact Karen Fairley.
