State Qualifying Information

The postseason push is upon us as Dowling Catholic prepares for the state qualifying meet. Here is everything you need to know!

When: Thursday May 11, 4:00 pm start for field events and 4:30 pm start for running events

Where: Gale Wickersham Stadium, Council Bluffs

Who: Ankeny, Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln (host), Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson, Dallas Center-Grimes, Dowling Catholic, Sioux City East, Sioux City North, Sioux City West.

How it works: 24 entries in each event will qualify for the state meet based on their performance at the state qualifying meet. The top two finishers in each event at each district automatically qualify filling 12 of the spots. The remaining 12 openings are filled with the best remaining marks after compiling the results from the 6 districts. The other districts this year are: Dubuque Senior, Linn-Mar, North Scott, Norwalk, and Waukee Northwest. Each relay is allowed 4 alternate spots this year (used to be two), so each relay has up to 8 athletes entered. That way at the state meet teams can move people into the relay that were an alternate for it at districts depending on what other events made it for them. What does it take?

Being the math/computer/engineering teacher and team stats guy, I have spent time going over the data I can find online to give us the best estimate of that it takes to make it and score at state. Here is what this section entails:

• Last at-large qualifier average since 2017

• Last auto-qualifier average since 2017

• Last to make the best heat/flight since 2017 - for the 400, 800, 400 hurdles, Shot put, Discus, Long jump, 4x200, 4x800, Sprint Medley, and Distance Medley

• 8th place average since 2007 and since 2017 - for events with prelims and finals (100, 100 hurdles, 200, 4x100, 4x400), this is the 8th place in prelims and not in finals (what does it take to MAKE the top 8)

NOTE: 2021 was an outlier for several events as it was the first season back after losing the 2020 season due to COVID, affecting the last 5 years averages. Keep this in mind for events where the Last 5 average is worse than the Since 2007 average.
