Remote Learning

RETURNING TO SCHOOL INFORMATION

15 OCTOBER 2021

Students Returning to School

The St Joseph’s plan for the return of students to school centres around these essential areas:

Supporting student wellbeing after remote learning

Supporting student learning after remote learning

Faith Connection

COVID-19 safety measures and procedures

Order of return

  • from 18 October - Kindergarten and Year 1

  • from 25 October - All other Grades

Level 3 and Level 3+ restrictions

During the staged return (18 October - 29 October 2021), schools will follow the Level 3 and Level 3 Plus restrictions. From 25 October 2021, all year groups will be learning at school and schools will follow the Level 3 restrictions. A decision will be made at that time whether Level 3 Plus restrictions will continue to apply.

Faith Connection

Students will participate in and celebrate liturgy, prayer, mediation, and reconnect with their Catholic community, St Josephs. Students will engage in Advent and Christmas units of work in Religious education.

Positive Behaviours for Learning (PB4L)

PB4L at St Joseph’s has contributed to making our school safe and supportive. It has provided students with predictable environments leading to improved academic and behavioural outcomes. It has provided staff with clear systems and procedures, ensuring a consistent and agreed approach.

The COVID-19 crisis will have caused an element of stress in our students. Our students will need school to be a safe, supportive and predictable environment in order for them to feel socially and emotionally safe and therefore be ready for academic learning.

Re-building respectful, responsible and safe behavious for learning will include:

  • Focusing on teaching, practising, and acknowledging expected behaviours, with the understanding that some students may need more teaching, practice, and acknowledgement, after having been away from the classroom for some time. Keeping classroom routines as usual and predictable where possible.

  • Re-teaching, reminding and acknowledging behaviour expectations based on the school rules.

  • Providing opportunities for students to engage with SJB class and non classroom expectations.

  • Revisiting playground expectations before going out to recess/lunch and during play. Rewarding students with house tokens.

  • Reminding students about COVID 19 hygiene procedures.

SUPPORTING STUDENT WELLBEING AFTER REMOTE LEARNING

The wellbeing plan aims to create a safe and supportive environment and will include opportunities for student connection, growing a sense of belonging, and the building of social and emotional skills. PB4L is an essential component and will focus on re-establishing predictable school routines and rituals so that students feel safe and secure.

Some exemptions apply. Please see the Level 3 / Level 3 Plus restrictions for more detail about face masks.

Personal Hygiene

Students will be required, and reminded, to hand sanitise before entering the classroom at any time. Hand washing will be required before eating and after going to the toilet.

Physical Distancing

Where possible, students will distance themselves from each other in the classroom. Students will not be sitting on the floor close together as a whole group and where possible desks should be separated. Students will also physically distance themselves from each other to eat and line up.

Physical distancing can be very challenging with young children and teachers will need to provide ongoing reminders.

Cleaning

Enhanced daily COVID-19 cleaning arrangements (with a focus on high-touch surfaces) will remain in place until further notice.

Responding to a positive case of COVID-19

The school has a plan in place and CEDoW has an established process for responding when a member of a school community tests positive for COVID-19. In the event this occurs, we will work closely with the Catholic Education Office and the Public Health Unit to rapidly inform impacted families and ensure we complete all required steps to safely reopen.

While under Level 3 restrictions, parents and carers must:

  • follow the physical distancing advice and avoid gathering outside school gates

  • adhere to mask-wearing requirements in accordance with the Public Health Order

  • remain outside school grounds (some exceptions apply for vulnerable students or students with a disability)

  • When an exception allows a parent or carer to enter school grounds, they must sign in using both the Service NSW QR code and the CEDoW Quick Sign-In iPad

Vaccination requirements

Staff: From 18 October 2021, only staff who have received two doses of an approved COVID-19 vaccine or have a medical contraindication certificate will be permitted on school grounds. Please click here for more information regarding the application of the Public Health (COVID-19 Vaccination of Education and Care Workers) Order 2021 in Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong schools.

It is anticipated that nearly all staff will be vaccinated prior to students returning to school. The requirement for staff vaccination was 8 November and has now been brought forward in line with student return to school. While we welcome the return of students back to school earlier than anticipated, it has impacted staff vaccination timelines. At this stage, only one class will be impacted and it is likely to only be for one week. Those parents will be notified this week if the class teacher is unable to be on site because of changed vaccination requirements.

Students: There is no requirement for students to be vaccinated before returning to face-to-face learning.

If your child has a medical vulnerability that you believe will prevent them from returning to school according to the staged return timeline, please contact the school as soon as possible to discuss your circumstances.

NSW Health strongly urges all students aged 12-15 years to receive two doses of either Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccines as soon as possible.

  • There is currently a sufficient supply of the Moderna vaccine to community pharmacies and the Pfizer vaccine to General Practitioners. Bookings can be made via the Vaccine Clinic Finder. Depending on location, bookings are available within the next few days.

  • COVID-19 vaccination is the best protection against severe illness and also reduces the risk of spreading COVID-19 to others. Getting vaccinated against COVID-19 now will help to protect both you, your family and your school community

The following fact sheets regarding the Moderna vaccine and young people are available:

Ventilation

St Joseph’s has been supported by the Catholic Education Office to complete a school ventilation review. The results—including any identified adjustments—will be addressed in line with advice from NSW Health and the National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance (NCIRS).

The advice from NSW Health and the NCIRS when it comes to ventilation of classrooms is that simple measures are the most effective. Opening windows and doors, and using ceiling fans to direct outdoor air in, improve the ventilation of classrooms and learning spaces.

Ventilation is just one of a series of COVID-safe measures in place at our school, which also include:

  • Service NSW and CEDoW check-in systems

  • Vaccination of staff and adults in the community

  • Face masks

  • Staggered timetables, pick up and drop off

  • Restricting access of visitors, including parents/carers, to essential personnel only

  • Use of outdoor spaces

  • Good personal hygiene and social distancing

  • Staying at home if unwell and getting tested with even the mildest of symptoms

These are all measures to help keep schools safe and we seek your support with the implementation of these measures to assist in keeping our school and the wider community safe.

Further updates

Thank you for your patience during this time of uncertainty and transition. We understand that new changes cause additional stress at an already difficult time. Please be assured that we are doing all we can to ensure a smooth and stable return to face-to-face learning and to minimise disruption not only for students but also for families and our broader school community.

As new information becomes available to us, we will provide updates to keep you informed. If you would like to raise any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the school.

If you have any questions or require any additional support, please contact the school and we will do what we resonably can to assist you.

ACTIONS FOR PARENTS AND CARERS

15 OCTOBER 2021

  • Year 2-6 only- Keep children home unless there is absolutely no option for them to learn from home. Children should be at home even if a parent is working from home.

  • Parents must have completed the Google form indicating their child's attendance at school in Week 3 of Term 4.

Attendance

Students learning remotely must complete the attendance form each day. The form is available on their Weekly Learning Schedules.

Parents of students who have no other option than to be at school ill need to complete a Google form indicating their child's attendance at school in Week 2 of Term 4.

Does your child need support for their wellbeing?

Cecilia Welsh, St Joseph's Pastoral Support Worker, is available on Monday and Tuesdays

Emily Lim, the School Counsellor is available on three Tuesdays per month.

Contact the school office if needed.

A reminder of available support

A range of support options are available to any family experiencing financial impact during this time, including the option to request to defer payment of school fees.

What do I do if my child is sick even with mild symptoms?

Click here for school expectations and information on COVID SYMPTOMS and SICK CHILDREN

Please keep your children home even if they have very mild symptoms

Any student who is unwell, even with very mild symptoms, must stay home. Any student who attends school with any COVID-19 symptoms will be sent home and must present a negative COVID-19 test and be free of symptoms before they return. Thank you for understanding the importance of these measures in keeping our students, staff and school community safe.

Please keep your children home unless you have absolutely no other choice.

We continue to follow all the recommended COVID-safe practices for a Level 4 school. However, NSW Health continues to remind us that any time anyone leaves their home and comes into contact with people from other households, their risk of contracting COVID-19 is increased.

NSW Health has confirmed that more than 70% of COVID-19 transmission in the current outbreak occurs within households. This means that if one person in a household contracts COVID-19 there is a very high probability that the rest of the household will also become positive.

To keep yourself and your family as safe as possible, you should only send your child to school for supervision if it is absolutely not possible for them to learn from home.

Why are schools open for supervision if it’s safer to keep children home?

The decision by NSW Health to allow schools to remain open for supervision is to ensure that those students who have absolutely no option to learn from home (e.g. the children of frontline health workers and others in similar circumstances) can continue learning while the stay-at-home order is in place.

The NSW Government continues to reinforce the message that the safest option for everyone in the current circumstances – and the best way to avoid contracting COVID-19 and passing it on to your loved ones – is to stay home except when you absolutely must go out.

When can I send my child to school for supervision?

The current Public Health Order makes it clear that it is only acceptable to “leave home for education if it is not possible to do it at home”. In line with this government directive, families are only able to send their children to school at this time if there is absolutely no option for them to learn from home. There are four reasons this may be the case:

  • Every responsible person in your household, besides children, is an essential worker

e.g.

  • frontline health worker or

  • in another occupation that requires you to physically attend a work location during school hours

(Parents who work at home should always consider the responsibility to keep children at home: stay home except when you absolutely must go out.)

  • Your child has pastoral care needs, discussed with the principal

  • There are other extenuating circumstances, discussed with the principal

Students have access to the same learning materials and experience whether they are at school or at home, and there is no advantage for students who are supervised at school.

What if my child wants to go to school?

We understand that many students are missing school and their friends. However, their safety and the safety of all students, staff and school families must be our shared priority right now. It is also important to remember that normal school activities are not taking place, the vast majority of students are learning from home, and very few teachers are on site each day.

Schools are required to only have the minimum number of staff on site to provide supervision for students. This is to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission and protect the staff and students who have no option but to attend school.

Students must sign in everyday (once only) by 12:00pm using this form.

Record of Absences during Remote Learning

Please ensure your child has signed in each day before 12:00 pm using the link to the left or their Remote Learning Schedule.

Once signed in, your child/ren will be marked on the school rolls as a "Present" attendance by the school office.

If your child does not sign in they will be marked on the Roll as "Absent".

If your child cannot engage in remote learning for the day due to illness or for another reason, please contact the school office via email at info@sjbdow.catholic.edu.au or phone 42831111.

Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to the St Joseph's Remote Learning Website which has been created for students as you continue to learn from home in Term 3, and parents as you provide learning support to your children.

The website is intended to be a first port of call for assistance with home learning. Please feel free to contact the school if the help you need is not available on this site. We know that home learning can be challenging for many families and we want to help wherever we can.

The learning, faith and wellbeing of students as they learn at home is very important and I hope that this site provides additional information to that provided in SeeSaw for students.

You are all in the thoughts and prayers of staff, we hope you are safe, and ask that God grace each of you with peaceful minds and loving hearts at this time.

Mrs Jen Charadia
Principal

St Joseph's Bulli acknowledges and pays respect to the Dharawal people past and present, the traditional custodians of the land on which our school is built.
