8th Grade ELA
Welcome to 8th Grade Language Arts! This year we will be using the curriculum programs called Reader’s and Writer's Workshop. Reader’s and Writer's Workshop benefits students by building reading and writing stamina, increasing vocabulary acquisition, offering choice in content, allowing students to read and write at their own level, and encouraging discussion/ deeper conversations for critical thinking and analysis of literature.
You may be asking yourself, what does Reader’s and Writer's Workshop look like? Throughout the year there will be teacher-led mini-lessons, modeling/ guided practice of skills (in class), independent reading and writing (in class up to 30 minutes), guided reading groups with same-level peers (in class), individual and small group conferences (in class), and reading and writing at home each night for 20-30 minutes.
Reader’s and Writer's Workshop focuses on each individual student’s development and growth throughout the course of the year. In terms of grading; Pre and Post assessments are given to identify areas of growth and those areas that still need more focus. Small group and individual conferences are used as assessments in identifying growth. Individual learning targets and reading goals are also set. Each unit ends with a final assessment and a celebration. Students will be graded based on the assessments as well as the data collected through teacher observations, conferences, and daily tasks.
