Sarsfield Cup
Well done to Fionn O' Brien & Oisin Ryan who represented Doon CBS today on the East Sarsfield Cup team. A great achievement and better days yet to come!
Miss O' Connell
Miss O’Connell got our Science Afternoons off to a great start with forensic science. We looked at fingerprints and how Gardai use fingerprints to solve complex crimes. There are three different types of fingerprints whorls, arches and swirls.
Each pupil got an opportunity to take their own fingerprints using a fingerprint pad and a record sheet that would be used in a Garda station
We then looked at static electricity. We used an aluminium drink can and a balloon. Using the static electricity from our hair or school jumper we had races with the cans. This was great fun.
Finally we learned about the 4 different types of teeth we all have. Did you know not everyone has Wisdom teeth?
We finished with a multiple choice quiz .
Miss Breen
Firstly we learnt all about gravity. We dropped a grape and a mandarin from the same height at the same time. The more mass and air resistance the faster it falls. We tried this experiment with a smooth sheet of paper and a crumpled sheet of paper. Sir Isaac Newton discovered gravity whilst sitting under an apple tree.
Next we learnt about levers. Our arm is a lever. We made a seesaw for Molly and her brother. We had to balance the ruler with the pencil. We also created a lever using just a ruler and a sharpie for the pivot. It was easy to lift the book up ! We also learnt about Air Pressure. We managed not to spill any water when we turned the glass and beer mat over. This was very exciting!!
Finally we were introduced to buoyancy which is an uoward force. We see buoyancy in icebergs, swimming and when a bucket is in water it feels lighter. To finish off we had to mske the ring of six balloons hover in a ring using a blow dryer. This wax the highlight of the afternoon!!
To conclude we took part in a multiple choice quiz on what we had learnt.
Mr. Moloney
Today we looked at electricity and liquids. We examined circuits and how they work. We learned the difference between an open circuit and a closed circuit and found out that electricity flows in a current. Pupils were given the chance to then see which objects were conductors (allow electricity to pass through it) or insulators (don't allow electricity to pass through it). We tested a coin, scissors, a pencil, a screw and a rubber band. We all predicted and then compared our results. All pupils were given a chance to try Mr. Moloney's Steady Hand game as well.
For our second science experiment, we looked at liquids and their density. We examined the flow rate of honey, cooking oil, soap and washing up liquid. We also saw their density when placed in a clear glass. We looked carefully at fizzy drinks as well and what makes them fizz. All fizzy drinks contain Co2 and this gets released the more you open and close the bottle. Pupils were then given a chance to make their own using Miwadi, water and baking powder.
Finally, Mr. Moloney had one last challenge.... get the mandarin out of the glass of water, without spilling any water. We all had a go, and using buoyancy and centripetal force were able to get it out. Great fun was had by all.
Mr. O' Connell
In our final Science afternoon with Mr. O’Connell, we investigated the topics of Sound and the Eye. Firstly, we learned that sound travels through the air in waves caused by vibrating molecules. We learned that sound moves through liquids and solids as well and that it moves fastest through solids. We made a musical instrument from 8 glass bottles filled with
different levels of water to create a scale. We had great fun playing some tunes on our new instrument. We also investigated if we could make our own stringed instrument from elastic bands and how we could vary the pitch of the note by changing the length of the band. Our second topic was the eye. We learned about the parts of the eye, how we see things and why we see particular colours. We also learned how the signals are sent from the eye to the brain. We learned that our brains can be tricked by different types of optical illusions and we had great fun trying to work out what we were looking at in the illusions. We even tried an illusion that made it appear we had a hole in our hand. We couldn’t believe our eyes!

Chocolate Chip Cookies
On Wednesday 10th of September, 2nd and 3rd class were very busy baking chocolate chip cookies. We learnt how to read a recipe. Ms. Breen reminded us the best way is to start from the top. This way you don’t forget any of your ingredients. We enjoyed using the digital scales to weigh our ingredients. We then proceded to using our electric beaters to cream our mixture. Following this we sieved our flour, salt and bread soda. Finally we added in our chocolate chips. We loved rolling the mixture into small balls. We then placed them on a baking tray allowing a little space for them to spread. We were delighted with our cookies at lunch time. They tasted delicious! We look forward to our next baking exploits! Watch out Jamie Oliver!
