Ever since TikTok launched in September 2016, the dance community has become bigger than ever. One of the ways is discussed on the Dance Influencers page, the app allows for industry dancers to market themselves and gain exposure. However, TikTok invites anyone into the dance world via dance challenges and popularizing niche dance styles (Cunningham).
Tony Oxybel is an Australian dancer who won the global dance battle competition Red Bull Dance Your Style in 2021. He said in the article How TikTok is Making Dance Bigger Than Ever Before, “Dance styles that were really niche or really underground are getting a lot of exposure because these creators are really talented, and they get to showcase a dance style that was very unknown to the larger audience. Then people get curious, and then people start replicating those challenges and start really delving into those styles.” Niche styles like voguing, waacking, afrobeat and more become popularized.
To the right is a dancer named Rylee Locker dancing at the Red Bull Dance Your Style East Coast Qualifier. She's a choreographer and dance teacher that specializes in vogue, waacking, contemporary, and heels dance. Her latest TikToks are going viral for her taking these styles to the dance battle scene.
There have been plenty of viral dance challenges on the social platform that have been started by dancers and non-dancers. These challenges are bringing more people into the dance community because anyone is allowed to participate in them regardless of skill level. Choreography can be shared and learned without the use of professional equipment, all a person needs is a phone. Additionally, music artists benefit from their songs becoming popular if there's a dance challenge made for it. On TikTok, #dancechallenge has 88.9 billion views. One of the most popular dance challenges right now is to the song Tell Ur Gf by Lay Bankz. The song currently has 1.9 million posts that use it and a good chunk of them are of people doing the short dance.
