Safety

In person

Before starting with us, it is important you are aware of the expectations we have for our students.

We aim to empower our learners to equip them with skills and knowledge to protect themselves and others, both in person and online. This is also part of our commitment to providing safe environments that all members of our community can enjoy.

Walking to College

  • Try to ensure your mobile phone has plenty of charge

  • Avoid wearing earphones/ headphones

  • Walk with somebody if possible

  • Keep your personal belongings out of sight

  • Wear appropriate shoes.

Dark nights

  • Avoid dimly lit or dark areas

  • Try to stick to main roads

  • Plan your route

  • Ensure somebody knows where you are and what time to expect you

  • Avoid wearing dark clothing.

Keeping yourself and others safe

  • When possible travel with somebody you know and trust

  • Avoid places you are unfamiliar with

  • Do not interact with people you do not know

  • Make sure someone knows where you are and where you are going

  • If you are taking a taxi, always pre-book and ask for an idea of the price over the phone

  • Consider taking a longer route if it avoids shortcuts through secluded areas (fields, woods, alleys).

Smoking

Across DN Colleges Group there are designated smoking areas.

Smoking, or vaping of any type is not permitted anywhere else on campus - including indoors.

Staff will challenge you if you are smoking/vaping in the wrong area.

This is part of our commitment to providing a healthy College experience for all students, staff and visitors.

Lanyards

Our aim is to provide a safe, secure environment for students, colleagues and visitors to any of our campuses.

You will be provided a lanyard before starting on your course. Your lanyard is proof/ evidence that you are meant and allowed on campus. A lanyard must be on show at all times whilst on campus. This is the same for staff, visitors, governors and our Higher Education students.

The badge you are provided also gives access to resources on campus, such as borrowing books from the Learning Resource Centres and printing documents. Credit can also be added to your badge so that you can pay for items such as food and drink at the Food Halls/ coffee shops.

Any acts of aggression, verbal or physical, are unacceptable and will be treated as disciplinary matters which could result in expulsion from the College.

Push The Button

At any time of your journey, prior to starting with us, or on your course - you can report any concerns you have about bullying, victimisation or harassment. You can also speak to a member of staff about any concerns you have.

It may be that you never have to use this, but it is important to know of this support- as you may need to let others know.

Online

When students are a part of our community, they will develop skills in their core chosen subject, but also in additional areas. How to manage your safety online is equally important as it is in person. We will also develop our students skills above and beyond the technical and vocational - this is what we call Personal Development, Behaviour and Attitudes (PDBA).

Below you'll find some tips and guides from some of Digital Experts. If you would like further advice, please do let a member of staff know.

The safety of others is also important. That's why we wanted to add this message here:

The obtaining of photos or videos of an individual without
prior consent whilst on any campus is strictly prohibited.
