TASK STANDARDS
To complete this task you must construct a Tee halving joint as shown on the drawing provided to a tolerance of +/- 2 mm for both sawing and chiselling
You must also answer a question about halving joints correctly
You may have a copy of the diagrams during the practical assessment. Your assessor will support you with this
This task can be achieved at pass only
WHAT YOU NEED TO DO NOW
STUDY ALL OF THE RESOURCES PROVIDED FOR THIS TASK, INCLUDING VIDEOS, DRAWINGS, AND WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS
YOU SHOULD PRACTICE THIS EXERCISE BEFORE ATTEMPTING THE TASK, YOUR TUTOR WILL TELL YOU WHEN YOU ARE READY
ALWAYS WORK IN A SAFE AND TIDY WAY
MAKE SURE YOUR WORK HAS YOUR NAME ON IT AND IS STORED SAFELY AT THE END OF EACH SESSION
DON'T FORGET TO COMPLETE THE SIGN-OFF DOCUMENTS WITH YOUR TUTOR AND ANSWER THE ORAL QUESTION
IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS
ONCE YOU HAVE PASSED THIS ASSIGNMENT, YOU CAN IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS WITH THE OPTIONAL EXTENSION TASKS PROVIDED. THESE ARE A DOVETAILED HALVING JOINT AND A MITRED CORNER HALVING JOINT
DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH TO FIND OUT WHERE HALVING JOINTS COULD BE USED ON SITE OR IN THE WORKSHOP
Once you have completed your practical task you need to discuss your results with your tutor and complete some sign off documents, your tutor will show you how to do this.
Select a straight, knot-free section of timber from 45mm x 30mm stock
Measure 155mm from one end using a steel rule
Use a square and a sharp pencil to square a line all round (You can use a marking knife to improve the accuracy of your work-ask your tutor how this works)
Secure the timber on a bench hook and use a tenon saw to cut to length. Make sure you saw on the waste side of the line as you have been shown in this video
Measure 50mm from one end and mark the shoulder line as shown
Use a marking gauge to scribe the cheek line
Hold the timber in a vice and carefully make the cheek cuts.
Make the shoulder cut using a bench hook to hold the timber
Mark a centre line on the cheek
Cut a second piece of 45mm x 30mm timber 200mm long
Mark a centre line as shown
Put the two pieces of timber together as shown with the centre lines lined up
Mark a line on either side of the top section as shown
Use a pencil and square to mark lines as shown at (A)
Use a marking gauge to scribe a line (B) 15mm down as shown
Carefully cut the shoulder lines with a suitable saw
Use a sharp chisel to cut away the waste
Clean up the joint with your chisel and check that the two halves fit snuggly
Once you have a good fit, mark the centre of the halving joint as shown
Use a combination-type countersink bit to drill a hole for the countersunk screw you will use to secure the joint
Apply glue to the joint and assemble
Secure the joint with a suitable countersunk screw
Allow enough time for the glue to dry before moving on to step 10
Remove the waste with a saw and sharp plane
Remove any pencil marks
Clean off any glue residue and lightly sand the finished assembly
Remove the arris (sharp edges)
Show the finished piece to your tutor who will help you to assess your work and complete the sign off sheet for this task
