The ability to work safely is a skill that you must learn, just like using a saw or a plane. We will start with the basics and gradually build up your skills until you qualify as a fully competent and safe woodworker
Remember that most mistakes in the workshops only cost you time, but safety mistakes can cost you a finger, an eye, or even your life. We are all responsible for our own safety and for the safety of others in the workshop
Health and safety will be covered in more detail in your theory sessions
TASK STANDARDS
To achieve a pass on this task you need to demonstrate:
That you can follow instructions on safe working practice
That you understand and can apply the basic principles of risk assessment
WHAT YOU NEED TO DO NOW
FIRST, watch the video below, then see if you can answer these answers to these questions:
How many people were killed at work in 1974, just before the Health and Safety Executive was formed?
How many people were killed at work in 2019?
Why are laws and rules for health and safety so important?
NEXT, carry out the task in the STEP BY STEP GUIDE
TO THINK ABOUT...
How could you apply what you have learned in other situations? (e.g. driving, staying safe on holiday...etc)
How would it affect you if you caused a serious accident at work and a workmate suffered permanent harm?
What will you do if you see someone ignoring your workshop rules?
Once you have completed your practical task you need to discuss your results with your tutor and complete some sign off documents, your tutor will show you how to do this.
This task is based on Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidelines, you can see them by clicking on this link: RISK ASSESSMENT HSE
Work in groups to identify things that could cause injury or illness in your workshop (hazards)
Make a list of these hazards
Decide how likely it is that someone could be harmed (and how seriously) by each hazard (the risk)
Make a note of the risk for each hazard (High, Medium, or Low)
Compare your findings with the rest of the class and with your tutor's official workshop risk assessment
Based on this discussion write up a set of workshop rules for everyone to follow
Your tutor will print these off and give everyone a copy, they will also be displayed on the workshop notice board, practical manual and online classroom
Always follow the workshop rules
Always challenge others who don't follow the rules (they might not even know they are in danger!)
