In January 2026, Dominican University of CA was awarded the 2026 Carnegie Community Engagement Classification.
The Carnegie Community Engagement Classification is the nation's leading framework for recognizing higher education institutions that demonstrate a deep, campus-wide commitment to community partnership. Awarded by ACE and the Carnegie Foundation, it has set the standard for authentic, impactful engagement since 2006. The classification goes beyond simply acknowledging good intentions. Institutions must undergo a comprehensive, evidence-based self-assessment showing how community engagement is woven into their mission, leadership, infrastructure, curriculum, and research — not treated as a side activity, but as a core institutional value. Dominican's team of faculty and staff spent a year coming together to complete the application while making it a meaningful process.
Earning this designation reflects a university's sustained effort to ensure that knowledge and resources flow meaningfully between campus and community — to the benefit of both.
