COMBINED DOMINICAN UNIONS GOLF
In 1963 Joan Priestman (nee Horne), a past pupil of Muckross and Wicklow, founded a golf society for Dominican girls. Our Golf Society members participate in this Combined Dominican Unions’ Golf Society and Outing where teams from the different Dominican schools compete for the Waterford Cut Glass Trophy which was presented to the Society by Waterford Glass. The trophy is Waterford Glass on a mahogany plinth with silver plates on all sides on which is engraved the name of the winning school and the year. The team with the best three scores wins the trophy and the team from our union is very well represented on this trophy. 71 ladies played in the first outing and to make you envious again, the green fees were ten shillings and the cost of the supper was four shillings. In 2008, 65 ladies played with 24 golfers from DCPPU. In 2014, the Centenary year of the DCPPU, the Combined Dominican Golf Society will hold its 51st Outing on Monday 7th July in Naas Golf Club
COMBINED DOMINICANS UNION (CDU)
Dominican College Past Pupils Union has been a member of the Combined Dominican Union since it was formed in 1963, and actively participated in all its functions both charitable and social. The Combined Dominican Union included Muckross Park, Dún Laoghaire, Sion Hill and Newbridge College Unions. The Union was organised by a committee chaired by its President who rotated between the different Unions on a regular basis. Whichever Union was in the chair took on the responsibility of the annual events which the Combined Union organised eg dance, cake sale, retreat and fork supper. Any profits from the fundraising events were divided out between all the Unions. A number of societies and activities were also organised, and Inter-Union tournaments took place in the Golf, Hockey, Tennis and Swimming Clubs. For a few years debutantes from each of the schools were presented to the President of the Combined Union at the Annual Dance. In 1965, a very successful dance was held in the Intercontinental Hotel, with over 720 attending. Thirty debutantes from Eccles Street were presented to the President of the Combined Dominican Union, Ms E Monahan, on that occasion. Two annual events are still ongoing - the Combined Dominican Golf Outing, held in Naas Golf Club, and the Combined Dominican Union Mass for Deceased Past Pupils. Originally, the venue for this Mass was rotated between the different Colleges, but is now celebrated in October each year at Muckross Park Convent.
