Aquatic WILD: Activities to Try

The WILD guides are divided into three topical sections listed below. A list of activities is provided for each section. Select one activity from each section to try. Be sure to complete the activity (i.e., add responses to appropriate Jamboard, etc.).

You can do the activity on your own (as a participant) or try it with a group of students or colleagues.

Once you have completed the abbreviated version of at least one activity from each section (3 total), complete the Activity Reflection.

Section 1: Ecological Knowledge

  1. Are You Me? - early elementary; match images of young and adult animals and discuss development.

  2. Fish Who's Who - upper elementary; identify major fish species in an area, describe the value/role of a specific species and locate where fish live.

  3. Where Does Water Run - middle/high school; determine the size of an area of land, calculate potential runoff and discuss impacts.

Section 2: Social and Political Knowledge

  1. Water We Eating - upper elementary; identify foods derived from aquatic sources and describe the importance of aquatic environments as food sources.

  2. Watered Down History - middle school; investigate the history of a waterway and discuss.

Section 3: Sustaining Fish & Wildlife Resources

  1. Riparian Retreat - upper elementary; a simulated field trip introduced the riparian habitat and create artwork depicting riparian scenes.

  2. Plastic Voyages - upper elementary; investigate sources of floating debris in aquatic ecosystems and how to prevent personal plastic waste.

  3. Aquatic Roots - elementary; research local plants or animals that have been introduced and investigate their effects on people, other animals, and the environment.
