Unless otherwise stated In advance, homework assignments are always graded on completeness. Give it the best try possible, get an answer using the steps we used in class (which should be in the examples in the notes), and put a star next to the questions that you want to try on the board. Remember to ask to go over them, if one person has a question, then others do!
Check Google Classroom for the assignment to see if it's posted there. If it isn't, phone a friend and see if they are available to email you a copy. Complete your work on looseleaf. Don't forget to put it in your backpack!
Make sure they come to speak with me when they return. I have lesson plans, but it is always possible that we go faster or slower as a class depending on how everyone is getting on with the material. For that reason, I often will not give work in advance. Enjoy the trip and we will make a completion plan upon return.
*Algebra I and/or Pre-Algebra 7 will sometimes have calendars "set" in advance. Students can assume we are keeping to those plans as best as possible.
Feel free to meet with me during lunch upon your return, but I do try to post grades daily. If there is a 0, it is missing and you can expect to make it up. The course expectations does state one day per day absent is allowed for completion time, but extenuating circumstances sometimes call for individualized attention. Please be mindful that completing work in a timely manner post-absence is crucial for being able to continue on with assessments in a timely manner.
Please meet with me during lunch or otherwise email me to schedule time after school. We can go over the rubric or assessment together to speak about what might have happened. Please also be aware that I sometimes leave comments on the grade itself which you can see on PlusPortals.
I do not offer extra credit on an individual basis ever. If a student wishes to earn extra credit, they should take the opportunities provided to the class as a whole. These opportunities are posted on Google Classroom 99.9% of the time.
Math is a difficult subject area for many students! Please take the time to look at the notes while completing homework, in order to alleviate some of the stress. Students are also encouraged to take time daily to practice on IXL. Students who are struggling and feel they need extra help should approach in-person (during independent work in class or during lunch). Students should also come prepared with a question/questions! "I don't get it" is not enough to address the material a student finds difficulty with. Have examples of the work that you are getting wrong and/or struggling with so that we get to the root of the problem faster! Coming unprepared often only results in more frustration and miscommunication about the difficulty itself.
In the "Courses" section of this website, I have a page dedicated to IXL resources. Beyond IXL, which the Diocese of Paterson provides in the subject area of mathematics for all students, I would recommend Kahn Academy for strictly academics. For gamified learning, Cool Math Games and Math Playground can be great tools--but so can playing board games such as Clue, Chess, Checkers, Stratego, Risk, and other games focused on critical thinking and logical reasoning. Reading mystery novels, in that same vein, can be just as useful for a student of mathematics. Mathnasium can also be a fun activity for students who understand math, but maybe just need a confidence boost.
For students who need extra contact hours on a weekly (or more frequent) basis should look into private tutoring. Please note, students pursuing a private tutor should be bringing their notebooks and workbooks to the tutor in order to be able to work on the actual topics which we are learning in class. Mathnasium is not a good fit, generally-speaking, for students who need a more traditional, 1:1 tutoring experience.
