Module 1B
Digital Technologies vs ICT
Module 1B
Digital Technologies vs ICT
Examine the difference between the Digital Technologies learning area and ICT capabilities.
See how the two are represented in the Victorian and/or Australian (up to V8.4) curriculum.
Reflect on the responsibilities and delivery method for implementing both of these within your own school.
Discover relevant resources for yourself and other teachers.
As of V9, the Australian curriculum for Digital Technologies differs markedly from the current Victorian curriculum. Additionally, ICT is renamed to Digital Literacy and also has changes.

Briefly consider your own school. Is the bulk of ICT skills taught in the DigiTech classroom or elsewhere? Are some of the ICT skills mentioned in the video missing entirely?
Click the green flag and complete the activity below. It requires you to drag the given concepts into the correct category. Does the skill or knowledge belong to ICT, Digital Technologies, or both?
Cards in the interactive activity are from a set developed by the Australian Computing Academy / GrokAcademy, used with permission and downloadable for printing here.
Brief explanations were added by DLTV for this workshop.
Do you disagree about some of the answers in the above activity? Some of the concept names can be interpreted in different ways, and the skills or knowledge may be applied in different contexts.
Note down your thoughts for discussion during the live component of this workshop.
Choose one of the two options below and complete the task underneath.
OPTION A: The Australian Curriculum breaks down the ICT General Capability into five organising elements as shown in the image above.
Each element has a Learning Continuum through six levels covering years F-10.
Follow the link above and read over the descriptions for at least two of the five organising elements. Then, visit the Learning Continuum for those elements to view the years most relevant to you and your students.
OPTION B: Of the AITSL Professional Standards for Teachers, two are particularly relevant to ICT delivery:
Standard 2.6: Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
Standard 4.5: Use ICT safely, responsibly and ethically
Follow the link and read over Standards 2.6 and 4.5, and view at least two of the relevant illustrations of practice.
View at least 10 minutes of the discussion video below.
