Dear West Oak Intermediate Families,
Can you believe today was our 99th day of school?! We are excited to celebrate our 100th day of school on Monday. Students may wear 100th Day of School gear or dress up like they are 100 years old for some extra fun.
Kindness Week was also a big success, and it was wonderful to see students spreading kindness and positivity throughout our school. From small acts of kindness to thoughtful words and actions, our students truly embraced the focus on caring for one another.
February is D76 Loves to Read, and we are excited to foster a love of reading all month long! Next week, students will receive a bag of books to take home from Bernie’s Book Bank, helping build home libraries and encourage reading for fun. On Wednesday, students will also pair up with a middle school buddy to read together in celebration of World Read Aloud Day.
We had a fun January Assembly this afternoon, where we celebrated students who demonstrated Perseverance. We also recognized 4th grade for earning 15 extra minutes of recess after having the highest average daily attendance in January! Way to persevere, 4th grade! 🎉
It's a great time to be part of the Wolfpack! Have a wonderful weekend.
Natalie Kalette
Principal
West Oak Intermediate School
SEL Focus of the Month: February's SEL focus is HONESTY! Students will be developing skills like emotion regulation, positive self-talk, and stress-management through our Character Strong curriculum during morning meeting. Please see below for the monthly family newsletters:
Lunch Menu Update: We are currently experiencing a temporary shortage of SunButter and jelly sandwiches. Whitson’s is working with their supplier to resolve this as soon as possible. In the meantime, students will continue to have other sandwich and vegetarian options available daily.
D76 Loves to Read: During the month of February, we are celebrating our passion for literacy with a month-long event: "D76 Loves to Read!" We’re kicking things off by celebrating World Read Aloud Day on February 4th, featuring a special "Buddy Reading" session with students from West Oak Middle School.
ACCESS Testing: ACCESS testing will begin January 20th, and we will be assessing how our multilingual students are growing in their English language proficiency. Each English Language Learner will be taking four exams, and they will be assessed on their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.
Valentine's Day Celebrations: We are looking forward to celebrating Valentine's Day at WOIS on Friday, February 13th! Students are welcome to bring in valentines to exchange with their classmates if they wish. We ask that you please refrain from sending your student to school with food to share or exchange to maintain a safe environment for our students with allergies. An allergen-free snack will be provided to all students. Thank you for your understanding!
Saturday Soccer K-3: Mundelein Soccer Club will be hosting soccer clinics for K-3 students on Saturdays at Diamond Lake School. Please click here to sign up and see the flyers below for more information.
Bus Bulletin via Lakeside Transportation: To help you stay informed about any future bus delays directly from our transportation company, you can sign up for Bus Bulletin notifications here: Transportation Page. This service will send updates via email about delays or route changes.
Diamond Awards: New to this year, we ask families to complete this nomination Form if they would like to recognize a staff member they feel are going above and beyond with what they do in the classroom, school, or district. Please consider spreading the positivity by highlighting the great work that staff our doing in our district.
D76 CARES: At D76, the well-being of our students and families is our top priority. Understanding the critical role mental health plays in student success, we have launched D76 CARES - a comprehensive initiative aimed at improving access to quality mental health services across our community. D76 CARES stands for Community, Advocacy, Resilience, Engagement, and Support. Treatment services are initially provided free of charge to district families for up to 8 sessions. Click HERE for treatment request.
Students played four square volleyball in gym this week with Mr. Campbell!
5th Graders are focused on writing about the main idea in a text during ELA/SLA time.
Students are having a blast with Battle of the Bots in STEAM with Ms. Levy!
Attendance & Well-Being: Regular attendance supports both learning and social-emotional health. Being at school consistently helps children build friendships, feel connected, and develop important social skills. Research shows, missing just two days of school a month can negatively impact a child’s academic and social growth. Making daily attendance a priority helps children feel confident, supported, and ready to learn.
