Meet the Director

Mr. Jeffrey Crylen, Band Director

Mr. Crylen became the Band Director at Prairie Grove CSD 46 in 2018. His duties at Prairie Grove include directing the Beginning Band, Cadet Band, Concert Band, Advanced Band, Jazz Band I, Jazz Band II, and small group lessons for all band students. In addition to his duties as the Prairie Grove Band Director, Mr. Crylen also serves as a Music & Visual Technician for the Elk Grove High School Marching Grenadiers. Mr. Crylen is also an active musician as a member of the trumpet sections for two internationally recognized concert ensembles: the Northshore Concert Band and the Wheaton Municipal Band. He also performs with the Lake Geneva Symphony Orchestra, and has served as an adjudicator for Solo & Ensemble and Large Ensemble Organizational contests. This upcoming summer, Mr. Crylen will be traveling to New Zealand with the Chicago Brass Band to perform with them at the New Zealand Brass Band Championships.

Mr. Crylen earned his Bachelor of Music Education and his Bachelor of Music in Trumpet Performance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he graduated with Honors. He is a recipient of the prestigious Mark H. Hindsley Award for his commitment and musical contributions to the University of Illinois Bands Program. He is also a Founding Member of the Nu Xi Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi, National Honorary Band Fraternity.

Mr. Crylen is an active member of the Illinois Music Educators Association (ILMEA), National Association for Music Education (NAfME), the National Band Association (NBA), and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD). Outside of his involvement in music, he enjoys watching baseball (Go, Cubs, Go!) and spending time with family, friends, and his girlfriend, Karen. He is a huge lover of dogs, and having grown up with dogs most of his life, he looks forward to someday (hopefully soon!) having a dog of his own.
