Education System & Enrolment

How does the education system work in Highland?

In Scotland, children must receive an education from the age of 5 to 16.  Education is offered for those under the age of 5 and over the age of 16 but it is not mandatory. Depending on your child's age they will attend either a Nursery, Primary, or Secondary.

Early Learning and Childcare (ELC)

Age: 3-4

Your child is eligible for a certain number of free hours at an ELC Setting.

2 year old children can be eligible for a place at an ELC if you meet certain criteria.

Primary School

Age: 4-5 through to 11-12

From the age of 4-5 through to 11-12, children generally attend a Primary School close to their home adresss.

Secondary School

Age: 11-12 to 17-18.

At 16 years old, a person can choose to leave Secondary School.  They may go on to further education, usually a College.

After Secondary School, your child can enter Further Education in either a College or a University.  Unlike Primary and Secondary School, you must pay to attend most Colleges and Universities unless you meet requirements for assistance with their fees. Each College and University is different however, so it is best to check directly with individual institutions.
