Concept mapping activities can be classified as four general types:
Fill-in-a-map
Create-a-structure
Construct-a-map
Iterate-a-map
Construct-a-map is the most frequently used assignment type in the literature, and can be done by hand starting with a blank sheet of paper or aided by a number of software tools.
Follow along with the slide deck and video to learn about and practice using the four different types of concept mapping activities, then check out the instructor resources for assignment templates and slides.
It may help to have the example and exercise files downloaded to your computer so you can practice.
Whether you are scoring by hand or using an automated method, if students are creating digital cmaps in CmapToolsTM (or another software), we recommend a few actions to make scoring easier, faster, and more consistent:
remind students to label lines with linking words and phrases (for hand-drawn cmaps too!);
have students use the Autolayout tool in CmapToolsTM for a clear, hierarchical layout; and
ask students to Spellcheck prior to submitting their cmap.
Note: If students submit their assignment as a .cmap file or you are converting from hand-written to digital, then you can take care of 2 and 3 yourself after submission.
