But, wait... is a concept map the same thing as a mind map? Yes and no. A concept map is a type of mind map, which is a broader category of diagrams that organize thoughts around a central topic. Mind maps can include images, phrases, parts of words, etc. They are popular tools for brainstorming and reflection.
Like concept maps, mind maps typically have multiple branches, but they may not be organized into a hierarchical structure and often do not show the nature of how terms are related. A "good" concept map will also have cross-links, while mind maps frequently lack clear connections between different branches.
Concept maps are also distinct from process maps, flow diagrams, and other types of graphical communication tools. Each has its own purpose, standards, and audiences. All can be valuable learning tools for engineering students but are used and assessed in different ways.
Are the examples below a concept map or a mind map? The differences between concept maps, mind maps, and other graphical representations should become clearer as you work through our training modules or try to score and interpret your students' cmaps.

We recommend downloading the CmapToolsTM application or using CmapCloud online. Other digital applications include templates in Miro and Mural or drawing a cmap in Powerpoint, Paint, etc.
While you (and your students) can create cmaps by hand, we have found that digital versions are of better quality, easier to score, and editable.
We've developed a tutorial to help you install and get started with the CmapTools software.
Follow along with the video to create your first concept map using the CmapToolsTM software.
Or you can skip ahead to the next module and work through the exercises on paper or with a pdf editor.
The tutorial contains additional tips for creating well-constructed concept maps.
We have also developed slide decks (linked below) that you can use to introduce colleagues or students to concept mapping and how to build cmaps.
