Law of the Sea Training for Officials from ASEAN Member States and ASEAN Secretariat
On 8 November 2024, the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) held its 13th episode of AHA! Hour: A Knowledge Sharing Session. In this episode, Ms. Jacqueline P. Buenaventura, Assistant Chief Research Officer of the West Philippine Sea Studies Section, echoed the information and insights from the Law of the Sea Training for Officials from the ASEAN Member States and the ASEAN Secretariat in Bali, Indonesia from 8 to 10 November 2023.
Ms. Buenaventura shared her experiences and interaction with her ASEAN counterparts on Bali’s culture and cuisine.
She outlined the topics covered in the Law of the Sea Training and key principles of the Law of the Sea as codified in the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). She traced the early history of the Law of the Sea, highlighting significant developments from the 15th to the 20th centuries, leading up to the adoption of the Convention on 10 December 1982, and its entry into force on 16 November 1994. Ms. Buenaventura’s sharing session also included an emphasis on the rights and duties of States in the different maritime zones.
The AHA! Hour is the Institute’s platform for returning DFA and FSI scholars to echo the knowledge they acquired during their overseas or local studies or training.
