What’s up, DMS? With Veterans Day just around the corner, I wanted to take this opportunity to recognize one of the heroes who works in this very school! And that is the reason I’m going to talk about Mr.Edwards, the Key Skills teacher here at T.S.Hill. He was an E-5 Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, and his story is one for the books.
After college, he followed in his family’s footsteps and went to the rigorous Marine Corps boot camp in San Diego. After that, he was immersed in intense training in the School of Infantry in Camp Pendleton, CA. When he finished classes, he was selected for the Security Forces, a specialized unit for terrorism and terrorism cells. Launched in the wake of the harrowing 9/11 attacks, Mr Edwards played a part in Operation Enduring Freedom. The United States launched military operations in Afghanistan, including airstrikes against Kabul and Kandahar.
He began his military journey in Chesapeake, VA, before joining a prestigious unit in Pax River, MD, and eventually exploring the vibrant streets of London. After two years, he was sent to Camp Lejeune, NC, and was with the 2nd Marines, 2nd Battalion, Fox Company. This was the FAST unit (Fleet Antiterrorism Security Team) in which he served until he broke his leg when he jumped from a helicopter and tried to rappel down a rope without safety restraints. A real test of bravery!
So, as we prepare to celebrate our veterans, let’s take Mr. Edwards’ message to heart: “If you have a family member or a friend that has served in the military, don't wait for special days like Veterans Day, the 4th of July, or even Memorial Day to say thank you. Say it when it is not expected to be said.” Every day is an opportunity to honor those who have served. We salute you, Mr. Edwards! And to all the veterans out there, thank you for your unwavering service and sacrifice!
