Advice with DMS Students

By: Emily Bolin

Giving advice is something that can be helpful to a lot of people. Most upcoming sixth and seventh graders could be scared about going into the next upcoming grade. So I have gone around and asked some eight graders to see if they have any advice for the upcoming grades.

First, eighth grader Karis Kennedy. I asked her if she had three things of advice that could help the upcoming grades. Her first piece of advice was to make sure you get all your homework done and turn it in on time. She also said to try out for school sports because it is a great way to hang out with your friends. Lastly she said try and make new friends. Talk to people that you don't know and try to talk to people you have never talked to before.

Next, eighth grader Emma Sadler. She said that one piece of advice was to always get your work turned in so that you don’t miss out on any fun days we have at school. She said that it is never fun to not be able to go hang out with your friends all day. She also said try not to miss any days because it can maybe hold you accountable for not being able to do fun trips with the school. Lastly she said to not disrespect your teachers. She said that you do not want to disrespect your teachers because it could make them not so happy with you and it could leave you with a bad result.

Lastly, eighth grader Darby Mcalister. She said that her first piece of advice is don’t act like someone you're not. She said to always be yourself and don’t change for anyone. Then Darby said to pay attention in class and don’t waste time on doing non-productive things. She said not to be so focused on your work that you become too stressed. She said to always take your time and take breaks in between if you need to.

Giving advice is something very helpful for a lot of people and I think that everyone gave very good advice. Just giving something simple could be very helpful to the upcoming grades that may not know some things that they may be worried about. I think that everyone should be comfortable in what they are doing and having advice from the people around them could make them feel more comfortable and maybe help them become less stressed.

Sarah Ford made a sculpture of what she feels and it is divided into two one half of it is yellow and it means happy and excited. When it is yellow that means she is happy and she is having a good day and she is confident to do whatever she wants and the other half is black for when she feels sad or when she feels like she can’t do anything and she feels like she doesn’t matter in the world . She made this sculpture to describe her life and what goes on in her everyday life Sarah said she this sculpture describes her life in so many ways.

Headed to the Top

By: Alexis Perkey

Have you ever been to Headed to the Top? Headed to the Top is a fun reward for kids who have done good things all quarter. The reward usually changes every quarter with the fourth quarter reward being the most fun. If you stay out of ASD and office trouble during the quarter, then you might be qualified to go. There are certain requirements to do this exciting activity including not missing more than three days of school unless you have a funeral or surgery. You also have to have grades at a “C” or above to participate. Plus assigned by teachers do not count as a punishment against Headed to the Top.

Third quarter Headed to the Top was at the movie theater in Cape. After the movie all the kids who participated went to the park to hang out and have pizza. Most kids like to go on this trip just to get a free day out of school!

Some students like this reward while others aren’t too big on it. Emmelia Cliff stated, “I liked Headed to the Top because I got to sleep during the movie and we fed some geese.” You can bring your own money for the trip and spend it on whatever you want. Alexis Ezell stated, “My favorite thing about Headed to the Top is the reclining seats and the soda, it was worth the money.” If you do your best around DMS and behave well you might have a chance to go!

The fourth quarter trip will be to the St. Louis Zoo on Wednesday, May 18. We won’t return to school until after hours. Remember if you get to go on this trip make sure you keep up with your belongings because we will not go back for it. Finish this year off strong DMS!

Favorite Memory from DMS!

By: Ava Schaefer

The end of the school year is getting closer and closer! Our middle school does their best to make school fun so students are able to have good memories once they move into the next grade or into high school. One of my favorite memories from my eighth grade year would be doing cheer and track. School sports are an amazing way to make memories and meet new people, so if you aren’t involved in school sports I totally recommend them! Going to different school events is also an amazing way to have fun and make memories with your friends. Today students and teachers of DMS told me some of their favorite memories from this school year!

Eighth grade teacher Mrs. Warren was the first to share some of her favorite memories from this year with me. When asked what her favorite memory was she stated, “Watching the utopia projects. All of the students and groups had such unique and detailed utopias. It was fun to watch all of the mind and ideas pull together to make new worlds.” Other eighth grade students would have to agree with her! The Utopia project was an amazing way to use your imagination to create a new world. Mrs. Warren also shared her most embarrassing memory from this school year with me, “My most embarrassing memory would be my advisory class losing the first round in all of the tournaments so far.”

Next, eighth grader Conner Hill told me about some of his most memorable moments from his eighth grade year! When asked what memory from this school year Conner wants to go back and relive he responded with, “Going back to football once we finished our 6-0 season” I’m sure the rest of the football team could agree! They had an amazing season and they were undefeated! Conner was also asked what his favorite memory from school sports was and he said, “I enjoy the bus rides because they are very fun and I enjoy hanging out with my teammates.”

Our middle school is an amazing place to make memories. Whether it is on a sports team, at lunch, or in a classroom everyone has something they can remember from their middle school years. Memories are an amazing thing to look back on whenever you move onto the next chapter of your life, they help you remember how much fun you’ve had and what fun is to come! So don’t forget to make some memories, because your middle school years will be over before you know it!

DMS Hunger Games!

By: Klaire Essner

The Hunger Games are games that take two tributes from each district, one female and one male and put them in an arena to fight to their death! The tribute can make allies and team up to eliminate other tributes, or they can stand alone and trust no one. DMS has had the chance to put on an eighth grade Hunger Games, while reading the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. There are 24 tributes in all competing in the DMS Hunger Games. Eighteen of the tributes have been eliminated leaving 6 tributes left. The tributes competing in the games are John Sepulvado and Britney Cooper from District 1, Rilee Hayes and Peyton Dobbs from District 2, Jonas Shoemaker and Keeleigh Flanigan from District 3, Devin Turnbo and Emily Bolin from District 4, Katie Propst and Conrad Purnell from District 5, Stryker Muzny and Trisha Morris from District 6, Aubreyann Budde and Sebastion Barker from District 7, Wyatt May and Jaylyn Lindemann from District 8, Blake Lee and Jaylnn Proffer from Distinct 9, Zaid Fornkohl and Kira Winters from District 10, Jacob Huey and Destany Cureton from District 11, and Shayden Conn and Nakita Ray from District 12.

So far the games have tributes from Districts 1,2,6,8,10, and 11 that are still alive. After asking Wyatt May, an eliminated tribute, if the games were hard, he answered “When we go to the common sense I failed, but physical games are easy.” Wyatt participated best in the Javelin throwing because,”I reached very far with my long arms.” Javelin throwing was the second competition the DMS Games did.Wyatt scored an 11 on the javelin throwing, hitting the target every time. Since Wyatt was eliminated, he was asked if he would like to compete again if he had the chance, he answered, “I will compete again there is no if to it, I will win the games.”

Jaylyn Lindemann is still currently competing in the games, competing for District 8. When asked if the games are hard Jaylyn answered,”A few challenges are difficult, but other than these the games are not that hard.” Jaylyn has won the Don’t Touch the Lava Challenge, Common Sense Quiz, and with Wyatt May’s help, the Arm Wrestling Contest. Jaylyn allied with Wyatt May before he was eliminated and Trisha Morris. When asked what strategy Jaylyn uses, she answered,”I don’t really have a strategy in playing the games. The only “strategy” I have is to rely and help my allies with certain things.” Jaylyn explained that she would want Trisha Morris to win if she couldn’t, because Trisha is from her ELA class.

The DMS Games have eight challenges left including 8th Grade ELA Knowledge, Racing, Book-Holding,Creating Shelter, Choosing Food/Water, Archery, Rock, Paper, Scissors, and Teacher/Tribute Choice. The DMS Games have played in Arm Wrestling, General Knowledge, Javelin Throwing, and Don’t Touch the Lava.
